What's the proper sequence,, process to be eligible to claim unemployment benefits once surplused ? Is there a waiting period? Don't want to sign anything that may make me ineligible.

I did some research and if you work in one state, but live in another, you should file in the state you worked.
But you can register for the work center in the state you live.
But, as always, do your own research!!
Some states like Ga, make you wait till the package has been expended. Ex- you get 50% of your salary, you have to wait 6 mo’s to collect
In California, the waiting period for unemployment benefits is 8 days. So long as you don’t voluntarily resign, or get fired for blatant misconduct, you would qualify for unemployment. Even if you get a severance package. There may be an exception on voluntary resignation for reasons such as employer asking you to change office location in excess of 50 miles away, continued harassment that has not been eliminated by the employer after reporting it, etc.
For retirement eligible folks, you might want to delay starting your pension payments until unemployment runs out. You’re suppose to be looking for a job to get unemployment $$, not retired. Retirement income from a former employer BEFORE your last employer is ok. Only retirement from the most recent employer would be a problem, because your employment status would then be “retired”. There’s a question on the application that asks if you are receiving pension $$, and a box to check if that pension is from your last employer or not. You have to answer that question several times throughout the time you are receiving unemployment $$.
Depends on your State. If company denies are challenges, you can usually win on appeal. File immediately after you receive notice.
I was laid off last Sept and I could have received it in California, but I did not take the voluntary offer. I was involuntary. But from what I read on this board, when I was laid off, it all depends on what state you live in and if you took the voluntary or was force out. Some states don't allow you to receive unemployment if you received a severance check, until 6 months after you have left. But like the last post said...you should ask the people at the unemployment office where you live. Good Luck.
Strongly suggest you sit down, not call, with your State Unemployment lnsurance local office. Your questions are good, don’t let second hand advice mess up your thinking. The rules may be printed out and waiting for you to go online.....but the sit down is still suggested.
