Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Tell me please...

Everyone that has been sh$t canned that I have talked to. About 35 in the last 6 months. I asked a simple question. Didn't belonging to the union help at all? All of them said F*** no. They didn't help me in any way. I used to watch my union rep walk around and try to be so confident acting like a complete jerk always messing with the non union T employees. Usually mangers. And then watching the T employees just ignore him. People, Please quit acting like the union is so great. They have no business in most of the work space. They can not save your a-- or your job. So quit giving them you money. You earned it. And to the union reps. respect all the people you work with. Not just the union click that will end up like the rest of us. UNEMPLOYED!

I was surplused and moved to another job. It’s not the best job but if it wasn’t for the union I would’ve been out the door immediately. It allowed me to make it to the 75 Rule which at the time I was five years shy of. Otherwise, I would probably be working a temp job somewhere instead of being fully vested.

Look at any union contract. They exist to protect the most senior members of the unit. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about layoffs or who gets to take vacation. What really s---s is if AT&T buys a company and unionized their employees, those people can wind up with more seniority than someone who’s been paying their dues for years.

Nice troll. Article 2 has nothing to do with severence or pay treatment or compensation of any kind. And you only made $86k a year with all that overtime. Ouch.

the irony here is that most people keep putting in office officials with the specific agenda of weakening or eliminating any worker protections put in place by the previous generation... keep listening to your tv for your choice of government.

We all know our union s---s balls. But just imagine how much worse this company would treat us if we didn't even have that.

There's a reason Randall's wet dream is to destroy the union.

Well, I was helped. I was helped because they negotiated 48 weeks of severance in the contract. I was helped, because I was able to take a program called Extended Compensation, which classified me as an active employee for the 48 weeks of severance, permitting me to keep my benefits, and the company match to the 401K. Under this program, the 6 months paid Cobra didn't start until the 48 weeks ran out.

And then, lo and behold, I was given preferential treatment in the AT&T rehire system, so I got back in, and made it to retirement. I had to relo, but, I got the job done.

Now, for many titles, there is the guaranteed job offer, providing one more safety net. That is since my time.

A person in the Union alone does not help you in this situation. Being in a Union shop does however. In a non-Union environment management can tell you same day and be walked out, no packages offered, no 60 day job placement/finding period, no modified rule of 75 to retire offers...this is what some don't understand, the Company doesn't just offer these things out of the goodness of their hearts. Union contracts obligate them to give these courtesies or packages out when the Company decides to layoff people or surplus. The Company then extends that out to non-bargained or management employees that go through cuts. I agree that no Union Steward should act better than any other employee. They give other Stewards and Union members a bad name. One think I learned is that Union covered employees fare better in surplus situations compared to those that are non-Union.
