Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Over the BS

Does anyone else find it amusing that Verizon decided to make MLK an official paid holiday but instead of just including this as a holiday they actually move a personal day into this slot but then act like they are doing us a favor?

Honestly I understand business needs and even though big red could afford to offer both I get it would cost a lot of money.

What I don't understand is why upper leadership continues to think we are id--ts and go around acting like this was done out of some favor. They do this with everything and it makes them look like id--ts and makes this job feel worthless.

" Hey guys exciting news we are changing the commission structure so you will make less money"

"Hey guys exciting news we are lowing your employee discount on accessories"

"Hey guys exciting news we are giving you MLK day as a paid holiday but you also get less personal days then you did before"

Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way

@XfTvP2e-5lbz: THEY WERE NOT HERE.

They did not contribute to the building of the country through the Civil War.

Trying to reimagine history does not make it so.

@4gqj, dismissing the contributions of other ethnic groups by saying "They were not here." is just inaccurate. There was a lot of immigration in the 1800s and early 1900s and these immigrants did a lot to build the country. For instance Asian's helped build the railroads and mines in the west and were subjected to racist laws trying to exclude them.

"I am not sure why a race gets its own holiday. What about the Chinese, Japanese, Indian and others?"

They were not here. They did not have any part in the forming or the founding of the country and were not historically subjected to the treatment endured by black folks, particularly in the area of voting and government representation.

MLK definitely deserves a day, but it really should be a Federal Holiday. Just like there should not be a "presidents day", but Washington's birthday - because not all of them were worth celebrating.

What wouldyou expect any company to do? They try to put a positive spin on anything they do

Its for them to BS and for us to realize that it is BS. And there will always be some employees who are yes-men

@XfTvP2e-3qdt I wouldnt call it a race holiday since he had a good effect on all Civil rights.

But I don't see a point in taking off a personal day and adding this holiday

Maybe a fair compromise would be to have what the union-represented members in my area have. As well as their regular holidays, the receive one floating holiday that can be utilized either Martin Luther King Day, the day after Thanksgiving, or, I believe? Presidents Day.

It seems to respect everyone.

I think the Company and the Union hit a home run on this one. Perhaps the only better solution would be a floating holiday that could be used any day, your birthday, your anniversary, your kid’s graduation, whatever...

I'm in retail, we have to work MLK day, we lost a personal day, so we pretty much got screwed. I would rather have the extra personal day to with what I please, so I'm still working on MLK day as I have every year for the last 7 years, but I now have one less personal day. This ranks right up there with giving us the same accessory discount as the customers, so we can have the same experience as the customers.... Greedy b--tards.

Having MLK day off makes sense to me given that a lot of schools already have it as a holiday, so employees are likely to take it as a day off to be home with the kids. If a large enough percentage of your staff has the day off then it's probably going to be a less productive day than usual thus paying for the rest of the folks to show up seems like a bad deal. They do something similar with furloughing contractors (in IT at least) during the holiday weeks, so this is just expanding the idea.

It was done last year.

It is what it is. Would rather have more personal days, but now that I am Infosys'd it does not matter.

Getting conflicting holiday message.

If POTUS day, is not a holiday, when do we get it?

We used to have a lot more holidays and a few personal days.

They took away too many holidays at first I remember the one year of working the days after thanksgiving disaster.

They don’t give us more they just change stuff around. I actually find the fixed holidays nice because everyone is supposed to be off of you take your own day in my group things keep moving and you have to get ahead and then catch up so it sort of makes it pointless.

When they did this last year, I couldn’t believe it. Nothing against MLK day but reducing personal days takes days away from employees that use personal days to celebrate special Jewish, Muslim or Christian worship days. Welcome to 2.0.

I'd rather have 14 optional holidays and take them when I want to. ;-)

Prior, VZ offered us 7 paid, 7 optional holidays. However, under the current political climate getting MLK off is a clear message that says to respect people no matter the circumstance. How about we start with that conversation rather than self-entitlement issues you seem to have.
