Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What happens if you refuse to report to the office?

My husband is a WFH AT&T employee, so forgive me if what I’m about to ask is common knowledge for employees. My husband wasn't asked to report to the office and he still works from home. As we don’t live in a hub city or near these so-called collaboration zones it wouldn’t be realistic for him to commute to work every day. What happens if he is called up and he refuses to report to the office? Is that a base for an immediate layoff or is there any misle ground, given that it’s physically impossible for him to commute?

I may agree with FHN, but relocation costs most likely may be out of your pocket. Budgets for relocation may not exist. I know a former VP that was asked to move and declined, they ended up resigning and was not retirement eligible. Their relocation costs probably would have been covered at that level of management. It was a personal choice.

Depends what he does and if he is in a targeted group this round . Notice I didn't ask about his rating.....doesn't matter. This is about cutting payroll costs and nothing more

Most likely they will not “ask him to report” if he was hired being that far away. Probably just target him for a lay-off and say his ‘job has moved’. Then he can reapply for it at the location they chose, look for another internal job, or get laid off. They aren’t going to suddenly tell him to drive 4 hours to the office or get fired.

Perhaps he needs to get a closer job where is is realistic to show up when ordered.

Not the company's issue you live so far away.

Most likely though he will be targeted in the next round of layoffs.

Most likely they would give him a timeline to relocate. If he did not relocate within that time, he would likely be considered insubordinate. He would go under COBC investigation and termed for that.
