Super Bowl "major sponsor" so ATT pays $500K to $1Million for spot

Laying off hard working folks to save money but yet cannot forego paying to be part of the Super Bowl in Atlanta ... which includes tickets, special invites to events and and spots for T volunteers ... expensive way to show how much their employees are loved. Surprise surprise surprise

Blame marketing who assumes a customer may like a product, but doesn’t buy it because someone else whose opinion matters to him (a so called celebrity), doesn’t promote it...Consumers especially the middle class these days are looking for above all else a bargain in this economy.....Buying decisions these days are guided by reference groups: friends, close family members, colleagues; people whose opinion matters to the buyer more so then the flashy celebrity hawking the product....

I think it is just just cultural bling, the C-level types want to rub shoulders with professional athletes and get up close to s-xy celebrities.

IMO, if you’re laying folks off and your stock price is in the toilet, maybe you shouldn’t be doing all these promotions at the Super Bowl and hiring celebrities. If subscriber growth is down, might want to think about a new marketing plan and/or investing in making your products and services better instead. But that’s just me. I’m just an average guy working in an open office hell.

Marketing departments need to appear to be current and reach their target demographic. When it's not your money (aka the executives own ) they spend it to gain as much exposure as possible.ots already been budgeted.

I understand the disconnect how can a company cut staff and spend frivolously on Superbowl ads. Because from a corporate point of view HR (staffing) is a cost and Marketing spend is a potential source of revenue, that's simplistic view but at the core of the thinking.

Just part of the marketing budget, second only to Network.

Don't forget these are the same people who paid Taylor Swift 10 million. Who cares about official sponsors anymore, with all the advertising thrown at us every day, am I really going to switch to Verizon or AT&T because they are the "official sponsor" of anything? Can you imagine the conversations like " well that seems expensive, but you guys are the official sponsor of this yearly event this year, so yeah lets do this!". Nope.
