Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So tired of this

Anybody else really tired of the "you're lucky to have a job" mentality AT&T has been cultivating lately?

Thanks to ever-present layoffs, we have reached the stage where no issues are being raised with managers in fear of being put on the list. Which makes it really easy for the company to get away with a lot in its treatment of us. More work for same pay? Sure. Complete a project within an unreasonable time-frame? Why not. Cutting more and more benefits? Go ahead.

I just wonder, when and where does this stop?

There is abuse.... and, "lucky to have a job" doesn't work on someone who has job skills in a market such as we're in.

I think policy is changing because they're attempting to change the model and, I personally don't think things will go back after they get their number if they do what they're putting forward.

The DevOps model for IT is all about small groups of developers with dbas and testers etc. etc. scrum masters that "collaborate" etc. They're trying to move to this model..... it will take years....

It's going to be very hard and, we're going to see a lot of really good people go and, most of the time, not the right people but, before it's over with, not many will be left, I think...

There will be no place for an old IBM AIX admin who wrote all the scripts a long time ago etc... or the perl programmers.

This will be full blown devops software development and software defined services.... so, that old IBM AIX guy should be getting new nanodegrees right now if he wants to stay..... Learn java, learn python, ansible, ELK, prometheus.... on and on..... being the "AIX" guy simply isn't useful now.

The company is sending a message.... small groups in the "zone" is what they're pivoting into.

Hearing that many people in the company may lose their job even though they have stellar reviews year and year and year and get stuff done just because of where they live is truly sickening! So keep folks who do mediocre work just because they live near a hub? Maddening, sick, stupid, reckless, .......

In the decades I have worked here I have never felt so down about my employment. Been promised for a years a promotion and hear stuff like - well due to a surplus we can't promote you. So great due to the constant revolving door of surplus announcements guess that will never happen! Then to have folks brought into my team from a totally different part of the company who know nothing about what we do and they keep their level 2 status and pay - come on! Seriously looking for another job now and if the right opportunity comes along then I am gone. Thankful what I have been provided over the years but the time has come to look out for myself and family. Also the prospect of losing WFH was just another piece in this bag of disappointment.

The layoffs will not end until they've reached their number. Their hope is to beat people down by making them commute to work so they'll quit, or names will show up on some report of too much VPN, not enough badge swipes, not enough mouse movement, who knows at this point. We're all being worn down which is exactly what upper management wants. Collect the check, do my job & ride it out is what I plan to do. We're all just sitting ducks at this point.

I am tired of hearing the word collaborate. Yes I am grateful to have a job but to use that as an excuse for layoffs, removing WFH, scare tactics, intimidation. It's lost it's meaning.

After EVERY layoff/surplus I’ve heard this from all levels of management.

yeah I would say leave. the job market is pretty hot. I left a few years ago because I got like four offers on the first four resumes I sent. I kept my skills up to date according to the industry not according to att training.

I like just got sick of you are lucky and blessed to have a job mentality. I went somewhere else and don't regret it one bit. My salary is more but my bonus isn't as big. I like the people i work with and I am in such a better environment. People are actually nice and not condescending.

Att thinks it is such a great place to work when it really isn't. People just there waiting to be surplused doing nothing and working from home every chance they get. I got tired of cleaning up all the "leaders" messes. They were made leaders because they talk no matter whether they are right or not and then when their c-ap fails or isn't maintainable they just move on to the next promotion or next job and leave their wonderful work for other "non-leaders" to fix.

Att is a toxic environment and there are a lot of other great places to work and a lot of other great people. Att thinks its you know what doesn't stink when it really is nothing but a big flaming pile.

you need to be a psychopath and move up into "leadership" to like it here, otherwise you will need to settle for a career being beaten down into submission. otherwise it won't be a healthy relationship.

BTW is not the same everywhere you go. ATT environment is so toxic, managed fake numbers to stay in their positions. Nobody care about customers, politics, stabing in back. And using fault claims to get rid of good people and the bad one strive. Please make your self a favor and do nothing just update you resume and find a job and get out of their ASAP. Before they find no reason to fire you. I’m a former ATT employee with 15 yers I’d service, and so sad how things change in ATT starting 5 years ago. May God bless the good suffering employers in ATT and their dear families

Yeah, sorry folks this is how business works in corporate America . It's the same in most large enterprises. The folks at the tippy top are generally so removed from the actual operations, and are so highly compensated, their only focus is on numbers and keeping there sphere of influence going.

Executives just bark orders , they don't care how you make it happen, why do you think Wells Fargo is so corrupt. Or closer to home why do you think so many retail employees are incentives to upsell or in many case fraudulently do so TOO MEET THO SE NUMBRS so the execs can pocket their dollars.

What's required is that front line working folks [you know the ones that actually get sh-- done) change their mindset. From I'm going to work hard to this company because "I'm luck to have a job", to this is a simple business arrangement I come in do my sh*t and they pay me, be skeptical of everything management says and ALWAYS LOOK OUT FOR YOU, which may mean leaving and exploring opportunities before being told to leave.

I put up with that attitude for 18 years when the economy did s--- because of the dot com crash, 9-11, the housing crisis, and other factors. Well guess what the economy only s---s for At&T now and it’s thriving for other companies. It is nice not having to put up with their c-ap anymore now

I took the severance 3 years ago and now have a much more enjoyable job paying 3 times as much. Get out!

I've had enough. of AT&T's and corporate 'murika's b---s--- in general to last me three lifetimes I want to take the severance and go. My problem is no one in my org knows anything about what's going on, and "leadership"either doesn't know or isn't telling.even though the boss of bosses in my part of the world (the CMO) sent out an email after Donovan's December town hall saying more info would be coming in mid-January (which amazingly never happened). Typical AT&T. They find ways to screw with you whether you want to stay or go.

Very sorry for people worried about holding on to a job they don't like working for a company they hate. Spent decades in that position. S---s as it's going on, but the intensiry of the feeling of relief knowing it's finally over as the finish line comes into sight almost makes it seem like it was worth it.
