Why return as contractor?

I'm just curious, why would anybody who has been laid off return to Verizon as a contractor?

It's literally giving them everything they could want - same experience and knowledge for lower pay an few, if any benefits.

And yet I see people returning as contractors all the time. Why?

If your skills are competitive on job market, you would look elsewhere and not come back as contractor doing the same old stuff, no matter if you want just extra cash or work only for a few more years. My director thought I would consider it if I find challenges in job search. It turns out she is wrong. I have a job with less pressure right after leaving in March.

I'm considering going back as a contractor after leaving in March. The flexibility to work 7-3:30 is pretty appealing to me.

@6gpe. With Infosys, but you have to be gone from VZ for a minimum of 6 months.

It depends on who the contracting company is and how desperate they are to place employees. The last time I was a contractor they didn't offer me paid training, paid vacation or medical coverage. So I just asked them for it.

They didn't even argue and gave me everything I asked for. I guess if they had 40 people standing in line, behind me, with the same experience, it probably would have been a different story. But I always was pretty confident.

In a lot of ways I preferred being a contractor. In most cases you didn't have to put up with quite as much bs as company employees.

Meanwhile the contractors in our group are complaining about low rates. No person with good technical skills wants to join. Something doesn't jive here

This is 3uut. I do work verizon and have for 23 years in nj. You say you have been here 31 years and dont know anyone bitter with verizon. Are you kidding i work in a 60-70 man garage and every person there is bitter. Would like to know where you work. P.s. did they just up your saturday schedule to working every other saturday ?

A 20% bump over full-time rate ? If you do that as a contractor then you're doing it wrong. I'd be looking for at least a 50% bump.

Not only does #3uut sound bitter but he/she also sounds like they do not work for Verizon.

I have 31 years and I know not one person that is bitter with Verizon. Good wages and benefits and reasonable work conditions. Certainly the company has changed and certainly the company no longer listens to the employee but frankly, I could care less about that. They pay me well and I do my job each day and then I go home. I will retire in a few years and have no issues with the company. Those that do would also be the ones that complained about the conditions in a big box store or wharehouse. They will complain no matter where they are.

I fail to see how working as a contractor is " s#$&ing verizons d+×k". I don't have to work. If I can get paid to do a job I know like the back of my hand on MY terms, why wouldn't I? Spouse isn't retired yet, so I can sock away some more dough for future travels. If it gets ugly I can always walk out the door. You see, this time, it's on my terms, not theirs. You sound pretty bitter. That shortens your life.

I would leave and come back. Double dipping and work the days you want to. Plenty before me have done so and Iexpect more will.

If one liked their job and wants to work a few days a week or a few weeks a month then why not? Those that stay active after retirement tend to live longer.

Yeah, if they money was right. Before I left on 12/28, I spoke to a contractor about his gig. He said the most important thing is to find a company (or manager) that wants you and is willing to go through a contracting agency to get you. He gets health insurance through the contracting agency that's just as good as what he had when he was a VZ employee. The only big miss was that he doesn't get a 401(k) match. If I could get such a deal, with a 20%+ bump over my previous sal+STI, why not?

I would come back if the pay and circumstances are right. They don’t want to pay overtime so a 40 hour work week would be a win. I only have 3 more years to work until retirement so I am not looking for a long term gig...

I don't need to work any longer. I would go back just for the extra cash knowing I could walk out the door anytime I wanted. I would NOT come cheap.

I would think if you have other coverage like @yrs said , and you took them for a boatload of money to avoid being riffed , you probably come back with less pressure . You probably don’t really need the job , so take their money and if you can’t take it anymore you just leave .

If you're getting lower pay as a contractor, you're doing it wrong. If someone else in your family carries benefits, it can look like a good deal.
