Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Surplus inevitably throughout 2019

With the TW acquisition now solidified, there's the huge debt that will inevitably trigger surplus in cost cutting measures by the company to manage their debt. This is double the debt of the DTV acquisition, but ownership of content should be a revenue stream, right? I feel confident based on my work load that I have a job through 2019. Beyond that, who knows? I hope anyone that is about to exit due to the Q1 surplus lands on their feet. I can only hope I get through this year and continue to look at my next move away from this company that woefully underpays me and admits it. As part of legacy DTV, the cheap side of the personnel costs, it's disheartening to work on a team where everyone makes on avg 15K more a year than you for the same work, less education, with only tenure being the discriminating element for their salary.

Agreed with above. Do not assume you’re safe due to large work load. The higher ups are putting on blindfolds, and choosing by location, title, card swipes, VPN, years of service, and on and on. There is no thought taken if you are a high performer. Middle management is kept in the dark on the reasons. I know of a co worker who was surplused in Jan, but is a high performer and vital to the team. He was fortunate that his manager went to bat to keep him. They reoffered his job back to him. Hold your hat, more to come this year.

There are pay discrepancies always in groups. But let me offer this- who do you think they are gonna can- a cheap person or a more expensive person? Also- when times get tough, people who “earn more” tend to have to constantly “prove their value”. They are in a more vulnerable position and will be targeted more for a layoff. Especially if a new manager comes in who doesn’t think they are “worth their price”. Lower paid employees can usually “fly under the radar” and survive longer in a toxic environment like this. Food for thought.

@hau - not sure what you are talking about but I assume T didn’t REDUCE your salary? If not, you must have been content with your pay previously, so why are you complaining?

You're not being discriminated against. The people who have been here longer should get paid more than you. It's called raises. It sounds like you are either a Millennial or need more to pay for all that can--bis you've been smoking. Have some respect for your elders, or if you are old maybe you should have planned your career better.

Let me play devil's advocate:

a) " ...I'm definitely worth at least comparables on education, experience. " - I hate to break your heart, but you're worth as much as T prices you ( which right now is about a decimal point on a spreadsheet ) If you are really educated, get out before the floodgates open soon and the market will be filled with other educated people, willing to take any job just to survive.

b) "My group has a very heavy workload that is projected through at least 2022. " - really ? really ... ? Planned by a bunch of mo--ns who will run this ship into the ground ? It is make believe work.

c) "This debt will kill us" - well, somehow true. Managed by current clowns, absolutely. An intelligent and educated leader could turn that into a nice profit. Not our case at "T".

Bottom line, get out while you can. Waiting on that severance ? you may be better off not to wait for it and find a better position elsewhere, outside of ATT and even telecom in general.

The pay discrepancy happened in the acquisition. I'm not asking for more than I deserve, but I'm definitely worth at least comparables on education, experience. Not working for a company for 20 years should not be a reason to have such drastic pay discrepancies for the same work. Tenure does matter, but so do skills and education. I didn't ask for AT&T to take over, but they've more than utilized my skill set to make money. Time for fair pay for equal (and often MORE and better quality) work. Having the same amount of experience should put me and anyone else in the realm of comparable pay of peers.

They give us dtvnow, livetv, and other steaming options for free and many of us don’t use the stuff. When will these company’s realize that after running and chasing their #’s all day, running home to make dinner, taking kids to and from practice ect.. That all people want to do is hit power on the remote and watch regular tv for that last 45 mins they have left in their day. The last thing I want at that time is another computer search to find something to watch.

Now with the last acquisition done, they are focusing on OTT streaming again; a very crowded field and not much ROI. DTVNow is losing customers, DBS is losing customers, I am not sure how AT&T can sustain by acquiring video businesses. I feel bad for all employees working on the video side of the business as they will continue to pay the mistakes of this horrible leadership team. It is puzzling and sad that this old great company with Bell Labs' significant innovations that changed how we live today, is now run by mo--ns who are clueless and keep making bad decisions with bad acquisitions. The BOD is doing nothing and just watching this company getting ruined by Stankey and Randall - Shame on you Stankey! Shame on you Randall. How dare you come on TV and brag about your useless plans ... You guys need to be charged with financial crimes.

Looks like the company is going to force middle mgmt to focus resources on work that has a definite payback to the company. For instance, how much time has been wasted coding mechanization processes because that are part of a 20 year old M&P that has no relevance to the state of the business today?

I would not assume workload will save you. My group has a very heavy workload that is projected through at least 2022. We were hit with the 1Q surplus anyway. The execs are in full blown panic mode over the debt and are making cuts everywhere.

Education no doubt gives one a leg up for getting your foot in the door and promotional opportunities. However as you stated, you are doing the same work. If your education doesn’t provide any differentiation between you and your peers then what makes you believe that you deserve the same or more pay than people who have been at the company longer?
