Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Got a job offer for a WFH position from AT&T

If I had this offer a year ago I would have taken it without a doubt, but now that I saw all the thing that happened regarding WFH employees i have quite a dilemma. I’m not in any of the hub cities, so if this situation happened again it wouldn’t be realistic for me to commute. Is it smart for me to take the offer? Could a similar situation happen again?

I would appreciate honest answers from people familiar with the matter.

TechDev, Mgt, not in engagement zone (yes folks they changed the name weeks ago, catch up), not in a satellite or hub city. Work from home, was told don't bother to go into the local office, they don't pull the swipe reports or network reports from these areas anyway. I am 92 days from MR75. I know I have a target on my back being full time WFH and not in the right location.

Take it, I’d give anything to not have to drive in & sit in a dirty office surrounded by smelly people. And you know your bathroom will be clean.

Everyone I know that was surplused this quarter had one thing in common. They all were located in non-collaboration zones. WFH was not the trigger but the city you work in. I'd take the money and run.

I would take it but I would ask if they have had a surplus recently and if so why didn't they take some of those employees.

Just be careful you never know when some of the orgs take on people just so when they surplus they can keep the people the have now.

It is numbers game both salary, pension, and number of people.

@qrd us correct for ATO - each BU has its own policy, hence the difference. We happen to allow WFH, and we hired a person in Dec as a WFH person. So, really, T is so big cannot generalize, you need to understand each specific BU and it's policy.

Good luck

They're not laying off purely on WFH status. Sure a lot in the last round fell into that category, but the reality is those folks, many of whom no doubt were stellar employees... fell into other categories that cannot be discussed out loud, such as higher salaries, a certain age, and years of service demographic, etc. The whole badge swipe, collaboration zone, VPN time nonsense is already starting to fade away slightly. It's nonsense. Wake up.

Take the job, take the money...BUT understand that at any minute you will be eliminated due to your WFH status. These guys are snakes in the grass and you WILL be terminated because of your WFH status. My advice, take the job, but continue looking for a real job.

We have no idea your particular situation, but all the jobs in the company are not being eliminated. You will just have to assume if they are hiring, it's a position they want around, else why job offer it. All this will probably settle down after they get the metrics they want.

In ATO, McElfresh has made it clear there are no changes to any telecommuting policies. Individual business units control their own policies. I would say you're fine if the job is clearly advertised as full time telecommuter.

My understanding is the WFH arrangements are still valid and each BU works their own process based on needs of their Unit, so if they are offering it now I suspect you would be ok. You never know what could happen down the road, but being it is being offered in light of all the craziness it seems ok.

If you are young without a pension you probably have nothing to worry about. That’s just my guess
