Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Hard to believe there are still do-nothings walking around

I've been with the company almost 25 years. I've been in five different positions. There were slackers and dead weight in most of them, but that has been pared down through attrition and layoffs.

In the group I'm in now, which is demonstrably revenue-impacting, we have no dead weight and haven't for at least five to seven years. Everyone is absolutely vital, wearing multiple hats, and working their asses off. And not just spinning their wheels in place with busy work, but actually advancing the business and bringing a lot of innovation. We have quite a few patents with more in the works. We're not in TechDev so we're not burdened by the excruciating bureaucracy there.

It amazes me that there is still dead weight walking around, though.

I'm FTO so I'm in the office every day. I have been seated by people from other groups that truly and honestly did nothing. I'm not using hyperpole and that's not a code word for "I didn't understand their jobs."

For example, there was an IT business manager that came in every day. He sat in the cubicle directly across from me, and I faced directly into his office. He'd come in, read the newspaper for a couple hours, take a nap, go out to eat lunch (he'd sit and drink beer at a nearby park), come back, read the paper some more, play solitaire on his personal tablet (I clearly saw it reflected in the window), maybe have small talk with a few co-workers, and go home early. He was about 70 years old, wore a sweatsuit and tennis shoes and quite literally did nothing. This went on for nearly two years.

Then I was relocated to another building. I forgot about this guy, assuming he would be off payroll by now. Lo and behold, he's still around. He still does nothing. He walks around chatting with people. Due to the open office plan, he no longer props his feet up on the desk while reading the paper, but goes into a corner huddle room to play Solitaire.

Now I'm tasked with laying off at least 1-2 people during the next round who are absolutely vital, and this guy is still walking around. There is absolutely no calibration between work groups as to who does work and who doesn't. How does his boss not know his daily schedule? How has this not been addressed? If any of my direct reports had his work ethic, they would have either changed or been ushered out during one of many rounds of layoffs.

I realize these are hypothetical questions, but just venting here.

We had the exact same thing in our office. Don't bother trying to get someone fired, it would take years to do it. If they fit into a protected class, you better have some lawyers. Yes, there are tons of dead weight for every person working themselves to the bone. I imagine the layoffs are attempting to increase efficiency, but they have no idea how to target it to the deadwood. Best not to ask questions, as you already don't like the answers.

I don't think it is good to stereotype....I work with two people currently and both with 30 plus years of service and they are different as night and day...One is already semi-retired and the other is a subject matter expert, mentors us all, always eager to take on new work and runs circles around most. I actually asked him recently about his diet and exercise routine as I can only hope to be an effective as he is when I am his age.

"So if OP is intellectually superior, why is he working among id--ts"

(OP here)

I didn't imply that at all. I'm not intellectually superior, just that my team has a lot of good people who seem to work together well. I actually don't work with id--ts, which is kind of the point of the thread: there seems to be very little dead weight around, which is why it's interesting that this guy is still working. BTW, the guy I mentioned is not in my group. He's in IT. He moved to our floor recently, I guess. Or maybe he's been there a while and I just haven't seen him.

Fitst, this is the result of people so far removed from the workforce identifying people to surplus, and 2nd, managers with no managing skills or no time to manage because they are so tied up with day to day issues.

Trying to get rid of an elderly lady...not the wisest comment to make. You should discuss the actual issue ...you make it seem like her age is the problem

If you were relocated to another building, how do you know what he did yesterday?

you must be a troll or impaired in some way if you believe this. The company can send your a-- home

today and by this time next month it will be like you were never here except for a few folks that might miss you. Welcome to the real world, anyone can be replaced regardless of your high personal opinion of yourself.

Who said anything about the patents being for software (besides you)?

This guy does nothing. Why are you defending him?

Why would you care about anything other than the direct deposit?

I've seen people work their fingers to the bone get cut.

some of the att patents is nothing new and probably infringes on some other patents.

I have seen some software patents at att that mean nothing and are not unique but probably infringe on some other already established due to their vague language.

You write software you have probably infringed on some patent due to their vagueness.

But hey there is big money in creating and defending software patents. Software patents only help monopolies keep their monopoly by using vague language.

Don't if your "IP" is software or not and I am not putting what you do down but just because some people don't believe in software patents doesn't mean they are not valuable or working hard.

It this kind of environment that has created the slacker you described. He has probably been stepped on and made feel like he doesn't matter because he doesn't have a phd or has created

"IP" so he acting like he has been treated.

This kind of thinking is a cancer in this company and I have never seen this kind of thinking at any other company I have worked and IMO creates a hostile environment.

I've known some older people who were SUPER sharp. I admit that many fall into complacency as their careers age. But that one guy retired a few years ago and was still cranking out incredible intellectual property for AT&T. It's all about attitude.

(OP here)

This guy is definitely not one of them. Yesterday, he sat in an empty conference room looking out the window for the entire afternoon.

Its mind blowing how a company like AT&T has let this happened in the first place. How in the world could still people with 35,40,45+ years in the company that are 65+ yrs of age still "working" ?? And don't get me wrong, I'm not discriminating for age or all that c-ap No No No!! I mean, how productive, creative or innovative this minds could be ?!?

Note: There are also some 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's that didn't care about anything just the direct-deposit paycheck!!

After having to try and get rid of a elderly employee and the subsequent EEO complaints, meetings with Legal and HR, I decided this lady could bring a cot and sleep on her desk. Heard she retired a couple of years later but wasn’t worth building another case after that experience.
