Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

TecDev Jobs - age discrimination?

There is a whole bunch of TechDev jobs on CareerPath right now for participants in the TechDev development program.

They list all the requirements as you expect, but written at the bottom of every one is something like "no more than 18 months working experience with a BS degree, or no more than 12 months with a nanodegree."

Can a job really say "You can only have X 'job experience'"? What else is that other than a code word for "No old people?"

This is just speculation, but could be they are getting some sort of tax credits or grant money for hiring people out of college?

2yxj , your point was addressed before. It is talking about total work experience, not experience "since you earned your degree."

But why the name calling?

Tech Dev Wasteland of Incompetent leadership. Replace every AVP, most Directors, would be the embracing of change. The whole structure is a recipe for disaster

Tech Dev is a mess. Why would you want to work here? What jobs they are not reserving for cheap college grads they are farming out to Bangalore India or hiring cheap H1B visas. F--- it.

Well you can get a degree at any age, so it's not discrimination. Pls with all due respect you can't be that ignorant...It can't be any clearer....

It’s for their college hiring program.....almost every major company has one. College grads would never get a job if every hiring in the country was about the longest resume.

TechDev is a trainwreck. Wish them all the best! 75% of the work is based upon some other group outside of TechDev mandating completion of some task otherwise you will be escalated. To accomplish that task you need to go to some expertly designed website whose goal is to torture you to the point of losing sanity. Answer one question, another 16 questions pop up. All of the information they require is in one of the other sh--ty websites where you already provided the same information. When you are not doing that, you are left with justifying your accomplishments for projects that already must have been justified in order to get the funding via business case and sticking it into a cheesy powerpoint.

It's not job discrimination per se. It's their way of "protecting" their collective **ses for the coordinated and systematic effort of the on going layoffs. I would bet those are postings on paper only.

It could be alleged to be age discrimination. Then the ball is in the company's court to explain the rationale for limiting the amount of experience.

I'd be very interested in that rationale. I'm kinda wondering if there is a typo, and not more should have been not less.

What an amazingly dumb way of recruiting "talent". You can't be too good or we can't use you. What a train wreck this company is! This just shows what contempt our accountant "leadership" has for engineering and coding skills. This will not turn out well.

The only thing that surprises me anymore is my capacity for surprise at AT&T executive level stupidity.

1ncb but it's listed on career path. College hires wouldn't be able to get to it.

@ywy that is a good point. I think it meant no more than 18 months job experience after the degree, but that's not what OP wrote. OP's language literally is the sum of all work experience. So now ATT won't even take people who held high school jobs or worked through college e. Nice.

That’s for the TDP program graduates. TDP program is a hiring program for recent college grads and they graduate from the program in 18 months.

It’s about time AT&T scaled back employee count. Too many middle and upper management. They rode the gravy train way too long.

But you would still have job experience by virtue of working. I'm 35. If I got my first degree today, I'd still have 10+ years of job experience and therefore would not qualify for the job. I think there is a really thin veneer to the legality of that posting.
