I was surplused 2 years ago. 10 years as a Services Tech. 30 years in telecom. Went through 2 jobs that were Ok, but just not a good fit. I found a position outside of telecom and I'm really happy and the field is wide open and a lot of hiring going on right now. A huge defense contract went to Lockheed Martin. They are going to maintain over 300,000 simulators worldwide for the next 7 years. They have been subcontracting a lot of it out. They like ex military and AT&T types with good electronic and technical skills. Google Simulator Technician II and you should see lots of openings with several companies. Good Luck!

@4ghd - thanks, I’ll look into it. Been kicking myself already for being complacent while at T. Even if I took one class a year I could have had another cert or a masters.
If you have a Comp. Science degree, make sure you get a CCNA certification. I got passed over dozens of jobs just because of that. I have 30 years IT and Telecom exp. But without some recent certifications someone else will get that position. It was my own fault for not doing that while at T. Get all you can before you are surplused. What you did at T is very much proprietary and specific to T. Search what companies are looking for NOW!
Thanks to the OP - been looking into it. My degree is in Comp Science though, so looks like I’d need more electronics training, but might be something I’d like.
They will do a thorough background check and then get you an interim clearance. So long as you have no skeletons in your closet, Secret Clearance will be granted. Whatever the case, it's worth trying. Hope this helps.
Do you have to have security clearance already to apply for these jobs? or will the company get it for you after you get an offer, for instance with AT&T we were told that jobs that say Gov don’t even try unless you already have security clearance...thanks.
Making $65k in retirement? From an ATT pension? How long do you think that will last? It's is best to have a backup plan. Just look at what happened with United Airlines pensions.
Then by all means please retire. My company workgroup is part of the Union of Machinists and Aerospace workers. The advertised salaries don't show you the Health and Wellness benefit. It equates to a about $5.50 per hour over your base pay. Paid directly to you. My yearly pay is $65k gross first year of 7 year contract. Raises each year built in. If you make that in retirement, that's great. But many of us are not able to retire yet. I'm trying to help those who need to find work now.
