What were your previous ratings? What was your mid-year? Was the rating a shock to you or did your manager discuss your performance throughout the year? If you were rated satisfactorily in the recent past and were blindsided by the developing rating, you are likely being targeted. If you are one of the oldest in your group and the rating was out of the blue, take good notes, keep good records, and don’t sign anything until you talk to a lawyer.

Sometimes first year employees right out of school can get developing, especially when hired in the 2nd half of the year. This is because the brand new to telecom employee is actually still developing their skills in a new to them industry.

Outside of that case it's never good. I've only seen 1 peer recover from a developing. The rest were managed out or were RIF'd. Employee stack ranking ensures those on the bottom are first in line for the next RIF, and many on the bottom get developing. It's more 5/90/5 than 10/80/10 for leading/performing/developing, btw.

It's also more difficult to find another internal position because your manager will probably tell the hiring manager why you got developing. Unless your manager has a significant negative reputation with other managers and exec's, that alone makes it difficult to escape to another department.

You have to be doing terrible to get a developing. Top 10%- Leading, next 80% performing, bottom 10% developing. So if you got that you are not good at your job. look elsewhere or try to actually do better.

Developing is not good, and dont blame the boss here. I'm sorry, but if you got this you are now targeted. Your boss and at least one person above them have already discussed you in detail. The "exceeds" and "developing" ratings create a lot of work for the mgmt... "performing" is the easiest rating to hand out as there are no action plans tied to them and there is no going in front of the execs to fight your peers for the few "exceeds" the Directors have allocated to them.

Focus on developing your resume. Your days are numbered.

No your days are not numbered. For all the years I have worked in this company, I have always been responsible for writing my own. Then my leadership reviews it and tweaks it. I have been doing this for 22 years without an issue. If your management is busy or has too many things on their plate, that is an indicator that they are asking for your assistance. If you were never asked before it may mean that your prior management had no confidence in you. Don't read too much into it.

Was this a complete surprise? What was your rating for mid year. What were the points noted for improvement. My experience is that Verizon has really poor managers of people. Make sure if there is a decrease in rating the reason. The next thing they is that to let go first in layoffs in lower performance folks. The one rating doesn’t t help much. What have you been rated the last three or if this is a hit by a lazy manager. It could be all of them Verizon again has really poor managers of people. Leave while u can and look hard fast.
