Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is anyone else doing “project collaboration” calls with their leadership team?

In Tech Dev we recently started having weekly calls with our leadership focusing on certain parts of our organization and finding ways to make it better. I’m not sure what the purpose of these calls are because they feel very ineffective. People are tripping over themselves on projects and I feel like gouging my fkn eyes out. Please. Tell me there’s someone else that feels my pain.

Nothing better than watching peeps re-invent the wheel. That is the ATT way. If I had a dollar for every time they constructed a group to look at the process and then come up with a process that was used in the past and present it as new, I would be a rich man.

SAFe was a PP/MA thing. They are gone now. Should have done the surpluses and ended WFH first, so people were willing to leave their old habits in the rear view. SAFe failed for a couple of reasons. Leadership didn't read any of the case studies to understand how much transformation was needed up front, and the workers didn't change how they worked. Just held onto their old processes.

If SAFe is the failure it appears to be, why was all that $ spent on training & the push for back in the office? Who is the person(s) responsible for this waste? And will those responsible address their failure, I know dumb question.

We explicitly cannot follow SAFe due to mandates consistently placed on us by Mobility / Labs teams. We try to be Agile, and we get blasted by TeamX one day for doing something to help TeamY, and by TeamY the next day for trying to help TeamX. Catch-22 all day long.

Has anyone else been on one of those project calls where it is determined that using a left handed screwdriver will save a million dollars and it is turned in as a cost savings. Then to top it off you find out there is no money to purchase those screwdrivers. Or you are looking at processes and ask the question as to why a process is still being performed with the way the business has changed and being told that it is a documented process that has worked well for the past 50 years.

SAFe is an unmitigated disaster. It is not working well in practice.

TechDev is struggling. Inconsistent policies between groups. Project funding is non existent. Managers scrambling to keep costs down.

The problem with SAFe is that assumes teams can be Agile. If you do not understand Agile, SAFe is not going to SAVe you.

last call I was on it was determined SAFe is not working out well at all. More wasted money. Wasn't that the reason for making folks go back in the office?

@ytu totally agree! "Collaboration" is such a crock of c-ap. We've had daily morning calls with our manager for years, the past 4 months the silence is deafening. The enthusiasm is gone. People are turning on each other, no one has any faith in management (with good reason) so the true meaning of

collaboration is gone. The word is DEAD. Resurrecting it as "engagement" isn't going to work either! The damage is done.

Collaboration will be replaced with Engagement zones. Just to keep it confusing.

What this is- an opportunity for your colleagues to throw each other under the bus and point fingers. That is what the culture at ATO has DEVOLVED into. Totally toxic. Everyone throws everybody else under the bus. I have integrity. I will not participate. I don’t subscribe to the jack Welch school of management and I’m a top performer.

What...collaboration only allowed in the ZONE. We cannot have people using phone calls to do this..after all, we are a tele-communications company ...

Might want to invite someone to those calls from other organizations. Project status needs to have some coordination interdepartmentally. You would be surprised at how many groups are basically working on some of the same issues. Lot of this is not to improve the bottom line but rather to come up with the “great” solution first in order to take control of a function. The kids in the day care center are becoming cannibilistic.
