Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Developing my skills for the future made zero difference

I'm 59 with 22 years and I'm now surplused. I've been looking internally and outside the company. I'm not holding out hope I'll find something internally so it's pretty scary thinking of "starting over" at my age. I followed all the wf2020 direction and have actively been taking alot of course work in developing my skills for the future and it made zero difference. I wish everyone still employed there my best wishes. Scary times.

This is just one of many stories but it shines a good light on the fact that layoffs had nothing to do with your personal qualities. Fortunately there are places where those skills will be appreciated, we just have to look hard enough. Took this post from @XmsDbAs-hqxr

Find any job internally with AT&T. You may have to get your hands dirty in a craft job, some managers are allowed to take their tools back. The reason for staying here is pay and benefits not not offered elsewhere. Don’t be to proud to a take a paycut also, you’ll make it back by working extra hours. When you are 55-60 years old stay if possible.

@hqxr, you sound like you want to stay in. Despite most of the negatives, so did I and when they called my number in 2016, I called on all my resources, longtime contacts and networked like crazy and made it back. As we are similar ages, most posters don’t understand the ‘age discrimination ceiling’ that faces the 55’s and over, one day they may.

The irony is that ‘some’ Millenials are calling for us to make room for them. On the outside, of AT&T, the potential employer (for us) all things, all skills being equal, will take the Millennial over you or I because of longevity....we would give them 6-7 years at best, health allowing....it’s just the way it is! The Millennial, through no fault of their own, are part of the reason we wish to stay in, the competition on the outside to gain employment, are the people that can give a company 25-35 years of service.

Put your list of questions together for HR for what applies (Pension, 401K, Severance pkg) and don’t rule out the ability to reapply to come back in....it does happen, but HR needs to tell you when that waiting period ends, from what I heard, six months, same amount of time as the Severance pkg. but from what point, when you receive the severance or your last day.....ask questions, record the conversation.

Ask if you can “Bridge” your Pension to age 65, I was told I could. By leaving it in place I would take it at full benefit....but, I plan to take it as a monthly Annuity, not a lump sum.

Good luck

@wfr - "AT&T has become an impediment to improving the lives of customers, employees, and the citizens of this country. It is a cancer on the nation's economy. If you have been surplused take heart at least you don't have to be embarrassed by the actions of your executives anymore."

That is fricken awesome. you could not have said that better. AT&T has nothing to do with improving lives of anybody or anything.

yep same story I hear on a daily basis. I do know people who have found jobs at that age and are actually making more money and a lot more happy and have started over after being treated like garbage their whole life at att.

just because you are over 50 doesn't mean you can't continue to learn new things and still get new certifications that will open up other paths for you.

att is a joke of a company. don't let anything they do be personal. they are sub-human.

wf2020 was just a way to keep us all busy until the surpluses started. you don't need people to run the network they've designed.

Those of you who were surplused in this last go around shouldn't feel too bad. You are not alone and you are not the last. Our "leadership" has acted foolishly and squandered, money, good will, and employee morale in a vain attempt to become a s-xy new entertainment business instead of a stodgy old telecom company. Our country still needs a strong high speed data infrastructure. Unfortunately AT&T has not put in a good faith effort to provide that need. It's not hip and it doesn't get the executives on CNBC. They have even gone so far as to undermine Google and small municipal efforts to provide high speed internet.

AT&T has become an impediment to improving the lives of customers, employees, and the citizens of this country. It is a cancer on the nation's economy. If you have been surplused take heart at least you don't have to be embarrassed by the actions of your executives anymore.
