Surplus events are a regular occurrence at T and have been for many years. They are very well orchestrated and somehow fly below the radar of the media. They will continue into the unforseeable future. Unless you are in the C-suite I would be very concerned.

The beatings will continue until morale improves! LOL The management got us into this financial mess and laying off works will not be enough dollars and will destroy productivity causing a bigger financial issue. Solution: Replace the people who got us into this mess starting with Stephenson, Stephens, Stankey and Donovan.
@QYZ, integrity and going the extra mile DO matter. You are better than those who did not appreciate you. Any corporation should be pleased to employ you, so please don't give up. That said, I can totally relate to how you're feeling. Totally.
@bcc Yes, I guess I was naïve. I was raised to believe that being a good employee, going above and beyond what was asked and caring about my job mattered.
@qyz, Layoffs are hard because they're so impersonal. That's what you have to keep in mind though. They're not personal. It wasn't about you, it was just the company seeing you as a Resource ID and a number. Don't be afraid to dust off your resume, contact your old network, and start somewhere fresh. It takes a little while for the T to wear off of you, but you will be better off in the long run.
@qyz sorry about your luck but you really didn't think all those lame awards and atta boys were going to help you keep a job?
I took the March 2015 offer after 28 years - I was not going to retire for a long time - but found it wise. John Donovan sent us two emails while 10,000 of us were considering the offer and, I quote "there very well may be layoffs later in the year." Twice! We received a very good pension buyout and after meeting with Fidelity and Vanguard, I ran. I had met the rule of 75 which helped. But stuff happens. I was laid off in an earlier job at another company after seven years. Then I worked for United Airlines and they laid me off after only 90 days (which is how I got to an Ameritech to get to SBC to AT&T). You have to keep your skills up and also delve into other areas to broaden your background, because there is no protection other than that. Good luck!
I was a second line manager laid off two years ago. Had been with the company 16 1/2 years. I had only ever had outstanding reviews on my A&D and had received several individual awards and bonuses for great work. I never saw it coming and it totally devastated me. I am still not employed and can't seem to get motivated.
