I know at least two people who couldn't have been happier to learn they were being laid off about a year ago and who are now constantly looking for ways to get back in.
Yes, there are a lot of available jobs right now, but that doesn't mean those are good jobs. Most people who leave have issues finding something even close to the pay they had here.
Not saying this is the case for everybody, but it happens more often than you think.

Do NOT leave AT&T on your own. Doing so will make you ineligible for unemployment insurance. Make them lay you off so that you retain that eligibility. AT&T has to pay for your unemployment insurance so do not do anything to jeopardize that.
better off leaving early. find a great company with a future not this dead dog with tons of debt and no direction. dont wait until you get passed by, as you can see on this board, a lot of lazy folks that did nothing with their life. want to collect a paycheck. wow...dont be one these people. do something

Everyone is not eager, some of us were voted off the island. And the on jobs in Career Path seem to be sales jobs.
I’m glad some of you have jobs here that are easy money. I’m sitting here working late, again, and thinking lord I wish I could quit. Need the paycheck to support the family. I am out as soon as I can find something, if I last that long. Stress is through the roof on my team and we are busting a--. It’s never good enough and even though we will have the numbers (real numbers) to prove it, we won’t get any credit. Our reward will be more more more. To top it off we are told we are in an impacted group. This is all because our bosses let others claim credit for our stuff, don’t push back on unreasonable requests, and trying to build their career off our broken backs.
I guess a job is better than no job. Yes I get paid well, no I am not a manager.

Exactly, most the jobs out there are temp jobs or temp to hire (samething). They offer no Vacation pay, overtime, holiday pay or benefits worth having. We would take at least a 30% cut in pay based on losing the benefits alone.
Why be eager to leave AT&T? You are receiving “free” money (let’s face it the work we do here is rocket science) so why stop collecting? Enjoy the ride (while it lasts) and keep WFH (no sense to start going to the office now). Layoffs will continue regardless of what employees do to try and “retool” themselves.
unfortunately krk is correct - everyone in tech is all about younger . and they're not necessarily cheaper, either. they just want a culture of ping pong tables, happy hours, free lunches, working all night long, and stock options. if i were 25 again i'd be saying hell yeah and jumping all over it. not sure if t will ever be able to attract this group for the long run which appears to be what they are trying to accomplish.

There are jobs, but there is also a lot of age discrimination especially in the high tech sector. If you are over 40 and get laid off be ware that it might take time to find work and your pay will most likely be much less. That is just the reality of the situation. I would suggest looking for a job while you still have a job.
Do other companies do layoffs 3 times a year? No! STFU!
Politics like weather is local and same holds true for your experience at AT&T.
An incompetent manager/director/AVP/VP can make you despise this company even though the company itself is generous with pay and benefits.
An employee's experience with the company is LOCAL and bad management (which seems to be rampant) can and does make your life miserable.
It all boils down to a culture of fear and anxiety given how much an employee stands to lose if/when they're laid off. So everyone begins to act in their own self-interest because they realize getting the same pay in another company will be highly unlikely.
Hiring standards at other companies like Google are incredibly high compared to AT&T and there's a gigantic talent drain where a few companies seem to hoard the best and brightest.
So the OP is right in that the grass is definitely NOT greener so be careful what you wish for since you may get it!
att is easy, most people sit around and really dont do much. of course most dont want to leave and yes, you might really have to have some skills or work if you decide to work for a real tech company.
OP, ,great post. while there are many people who are poorly treated here, the grass is not always greener on the other side. ATT is not unique in how people feel about it. I go on the VZ blog and wow, you would think the same people post here and there.
