AT&T has done so much damage to Direct TV, their formerly great customer service, and employee morale that they would never get back the premium they paid for Direct TV.
A much more productive idea would be to get rid of Randall. And throw his a-- out the plane without his golden parachute too.
I think they need it, because much of their internet offering is on copper. Moving the TV from Uverse TV to Direct TV frees up bandwidth on their internet connections.
Also, Direct TV could be part of a nation-wide triple play, with 5G internet, cell phone, and the other piece, TV. Of course, the TV could come over the 5G internet - but right now, wireless internet is constrained by data caps.

As long as they are selling entertainment tv, they will keep Directv. That business includes all the content carry contracts for content they deliver, regardless of the dwindling subscriber base in the satellite business. Those contracts are probably the biggest asset the company owns.

Everything ATT touches loses value because of mismanagement, inadequaate investment, and excessive cost cutting (to compensate for mismanagement and inadequate investment).
What Wall Street and financial press observers don't really get is how toxic and disfunctional ATT realy is. You have to work here to really appreciate that.
If this comes to pass, the board needs to take a long, hard look at Randall and ask him to step down.
What was the point of it all?
Now that they ruined Directv, and screwed up the lives of many of their workers, sure why not.
Most of us at DIRECTV would welcome this with open arms. Anything to distance ourselves from the rancid and trashy AT&T culture, with its surplus mentality and mouthbreathing workforce.
