Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Elimination of WFH is only one tactic they're employing

Elimination of WFH is only one tactic they're employing. Last Friday there was a call informing a number of employees in ATL their jobs are moving to LA. With kids in school, working spouses, etc. you know that only about 20% will end up making the trip. In some orgs the movement to LA has been going on for more than a year now, so they know full well how low the take rate for forced relo is.

It’s sad that this is happening in this manner. Posted originally by @X0ihBm2-1dpu

A move from Atlanta to la is financially impossible. Management KNOWS THIS. this is a layoff in disguise.

WFH people are often (if not usually) more productive than those who go to the office every day. This is because they know it's assumed they're doing nothing, so they do extra to compensate (and not lose theit ability to WFH). Also, while WFH is considered a perk by some, what should be recognized is that those who WFH have next to bo chance at promotion in that they are outside of office politics, and in ATT political connection is one of the two criteria for promotion (the other being an ability to lay down a convincing line of BS in front of an audience).

What's going on isn't about increasing collaboration or anything related to that. It's about the company being disfunctional at all levels and leadership's unwillingness to take responsibility fot it. Because it can't be their fault, it somehow must be that of the workforce. That's all this is.

It would be interesting to start a thread in which all the mistakes they''ve made over the past five years or so were listed. I wonder how the consequences of those things would compare to whatever benefits they think they're going to realize from cramming employees into corporate feedlots.

HA.......”collaboration.”

Stand around and talk all day about football, what you’re doing this weekend, how the family is, what you ate for dinner, who’s getting promoted.

Oh yea......and work stuff too sometimes maybe.

@1typ there were no HR policy changes, which they had loosened about 5 years ago since previously WFH required director approval and was changed to more or less manager discretion. no official policy mandate to return to office besides frequent reminders that we are expected to be in the office and that collaboration is king. you could disobey your manager but not many are willing to risk that. this round of surplus is different because this is the first we are hearing of the company focusing exclusively on a small number of key cities though even that list of cities is not being publicly shared with lower level employees.that info coupled with townhalls repeating how hard 2019 is going to be on budgets -- meaning surplusses, multiple and not small numbers -- has a lot of remote workers very nervous that their days are numbered.

opportunity to relocate is not often provided and there is no opportunity to correct your actions. if youre on the list because you never go into the office because your team didnt require it, doesnt matter.youre judged on criteria you didnt know. youve got 60 days on payroll then are toast. the only way you forfeit severence is if a different position is available to you within your time on payroll located within 50 miles and you decline it.

Our VP sent multiple messages calling us all back into the office for at least 4 days per week.

I don't work for AT&T, but would like to know how you were informed that you can't wfh. Did HR change the USA policy or did your manager (or department head) tell each group they can't wfh any longer?

If they are asking you to relocate else you will lose your job that would mean you won't get any severance since you are voluntarily quitting - Is this assumption correct?

Look at me I spend 12-14 hours in the office 5 days a week doing 2 real hours of work a day, then tell everyone how they won’t know what “real work is.” Work smarter not harder my dude and honestly, people get more done at home because they aren’t b---s---ting at the water cooler all day.

Reposing my comment to your earlier thread -

OMG people if the move has been going on for a year you should have been expecting this. We have been informed for years about the 2020 downsize and consolidations. Don't blame the Company if you choose not to or unable to relocate. This is life expect the unexpected and deal with it. Stop whining. AT&T does not owe you anything. There are no guarantees in life. Be thankful for what you have. Not a TROLL
