Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Explain like I’m 5

So, let’s be honest. I game my metrics, numbers...what you will and I game hard. Meaning I lie on a daily basis which usually lands me in the upper third or higher among my peers. Now, everyone else is doing the same...this isn’t unknown in fact I would call it SOP. How clever you are determines your “ranking”.

So if the Allmighty determines budgets, earnings, etc based on the fake numbers do these same crunchers have a margin of error? Or is it all bs, because of a true audit we’re to take place I really beleive this company is in a sh--hole.

Take note I do not cheat because I want to. I have to while next level gives me a pat on the back while head is turned then told to do better next quarter.

Sorry not stating dept. I work in.

Hey let’s all get along, most of these manual laborers hold bachelors degrees or higher. Don’t look down on them because they make more than 90% of management titles, cheaper health care and contracted job security clauses. When you make an educated decision on career progression the grass is definitely not greener on the other side. Keep thinking because you wear your polo and khakis to work that you’re of more value —— because you’re not.

I agree, but the honest lose their jobs. I was on a pip for doing the right thing until I decided to keep eyes wide shut. That’s the reality. I’ve seen coworkers let go for doing the right thing not the AT&T thing.

Craft are the manual laborers, majority union, who tend to think the world revolves around them and hate all management employees because they don't realize there is a whole world of of management employees that don't directly manage union workers but rather support other parts of the corporation. They're usually vulgar if you question who they are or their worth.

The only number that matters this year is the expense and liability you represent on the master spreadsheet. That cost must be brought down closer to zero.

My manager is aware that many of us manufacture certain numbers. You would think that if you just worked hard and stayed on task that the numbers would just be what they are. Nope. I have been frequently counseled for taking ownership of issues and driving them to resolution. Usually, when the contact says something like "You are the 5th person in your department that I have talked to, can YOU help me?" My manager actually made this statement to me a while back...." You do an admirable job taking care of your customers. But that is not what we are here for". That statement shocked me so much, that blood rushed to my head and I got tunnel vision. Could not believe what I had just heard.

Management creates an environment of unrealistic expectations. The cheaters appear to be the top performers and those who do the job right are constantly harassed by management for not making their numbers. My manager is well aware of what techs in my group do to manufacture their numbers. In fact, he is complicit because he encourages it.

I know the folks in my group do not falsify our numbers. Finance make us take a 50% cut on our actuals because they are too good and management doesn’t believe it. It makes the other groups look bad. The team I’m on are hard working folks that pride themselves on making an impact. Other groups just do what ever the cool buzz worthy thing is and rarely have results to show for it. It really s---s for us, as we do not get recognized for the work we do.

We had metrics when I was craft and I never gamed the system. I met the goals set. To those who cheat there’s no excuse and the additional work put on you as a result (ie for the field means more techs reporting to them) is on you, not the company. 4 words: falsification of company records. I for one know who’s cheating and have documentation ready should I need to use it because I don’t cheat and I shouldn’t be reprimanded or otherwise negatively impacted as a result of someone who is.

Which department you work in is immaterial. It happens throughout the company. Management and craft alike. I often wondered if a third line would ever face upstream and say “this is all BS and I won’t play anymore”. Of course I know the answer. All the numbers I was familiar with were bogus and I cannot believe that no one in upper management wasn’t aware of that. We’re all complicit.
