It is not legal in any state for a former/current employer to provide your salary to a potential future employer. What is legal is the new potential employer asking you personally for copies of your W-2 or paycheck stubs.
They should give you a number and/or website and no further info. It used to be theworknumber and you can choose to give an prospective employer a key code to get your salary or not give them access.
I think that when they call into the work verification line it tells them your length of employment and last salary. I requested it for myself and saw both.
If you apply with AT&T they ask for your W-2, at least back when I applied with them years ago

Normally, for legal reasons, corporations will verify that you work (worked) for them and what years you were there. That's it.
Only if you give them permission to.
