Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Promoting to management now?

I am seeing all over the place, that managers are trying to promote people into management, with an obvious intention to replace those who are leaving. How can we be promoting people when we are being told that we need to reduce headcount and that is why the VSP was offered to 40,000+ managers. This looks like one of the biggest age discrimination cases in history!

Is OP even a Verizon employee? I swear amateur investors like to try to mingle with employees to try to find an edge. They seem to be victim to so many fallacies. Anyhow..

Part of the VSP was offered to "management employees". Meaning: not store workers, not field workers. Think "office employees who run the business". So that would be things like business application teams, accountants, developers, circuit engineers, security engineers, marketing, product developers, etc. Some of those "management employees" are actually managers, such as an accounting team's manager.

If an actual manager leaves and is replaced by one of their employees, who cares? Both are still management employees, so the net numbers are unaffected. I'll admit that "management employees" is a really stupid term. Yet it works out very well for Verizon when people see that 10,000 or more "managers" left the company. "Woohoo! They got rid of the dead wood!" Actually, they're shedding core employees (some who are critical) which aren't in the field.

I do not have the same feeling as “volunteer”. I was not getting promoted since I am not the director’s favorite. Now she is thrilled that people are moving on.

They are not permitted to backfill more than 20% of those who are leaving, but that’s the total sum of a group. They may promote people internally to backfill necessary positions, like supervisors or managers, and then they just won’t backfill the person who is getting promoted.

Many jobs will be backfilled. I'm a manager who is leaving, and I know for a fact my job will be backfilled. Many (but certainly not all) field local manager jobs will be backfilled. The associate headcount hasn't changed, so they still need to have a certain number of local managers to supervise them. My understanding is that the backfills will come from temp-promotes, perm-promotes, laterals, maybe some downgrades, and if all else fails in certain situations off the street hires.

Honestly who cares we will all be gone shortly and I don't understand why people go on here to demean another's post or opinion. Who really cares? We will all know in a week what day we are off payroll.

@Wru1Jx9-qns - Nope, I was laid of in November 2015 with about 5000 others, and we were not offered voluntary any thing. We just flat-out got Rif'd. Most of the "tenured" folks were not ready to leave, including me. I still have a lot of life left in this old body and I still work to this day. Verizon has always wiggled around the age discrimination rules and this should come as no surprise to anyone who worked for Verizon. The company wants a younger workforce, fresh blood, to reflect a modern atmosphere like Google or any of the other tech companies. But this is just my opinion....

I definitely took the package because I am tired of the stress and uncertainty in this company. But to be honest, I dont care what the company calls this package. Nothing about it feels "voluntary" to me. I felt like I was down the barrel of a gun and someone was telling me to take the package and leave, or I'm pulling the trigger.

I have seen it so many times, there are always people who move to the top in worse situations. You just need to know where you are and how well you are liked by upper management, anything else is possible

"seeing all over the place"

cite specifics, otherwise this is blah, blah, blah.

And it's not discrimination. It's a voluntary program and while predominantly higher tenured employees may have taken it, it's because they are close to retirement anyway and saw good deal and didn't want to deal with the stress and uncertainty any longer.
