Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

December layoffs

Somebody mentioned a while ago there'd be some layoffs in December, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Now I'm no longer sure if I imagined it.

Was there a mention of December layoffs? If there wasn't, I'll be happy enough to ignore the fact I might be going senile.

they could put a vendor in labs like accenture, do knowledge transfer for awhile, then cut people a few quarters later

They could sell Tech Dev to Infosys and rebadge everyone.

They could cut perm jobs in labs and replace with the contractors, but at the same time (January)? Not likely.

@WrDySg1-7alu I was thinking the same thing. Contractors are a lot less overhead.

We had a voluntary package several months ago, but it was the usual 6 month FMP package. There were some who took the "package" that were close to retirement or wanted to get out, but it wasn't enough so they had a 10% cut following that. The rumor is either middle of this month (December) or sometime in January, hence the reason they wanted everyone's EOY accomplishments entered in mid November (earlier than usual).

@WrDySg1 Not sure which part of Labs will be impacted in January. Do you have more detail info?

We just got info that "many" contractors will be transferred from Tech Dev to Labs groups in January. So looks like Tech Dev got really big impact. Because of all these new changes I don't think Labs will be impacted in the first quarter. Maybe second or third quarter? Anyone got more authoritative information?

We were told by management that there will be a 15% "downsizing" in January, at AT&T Labs. We were told to be glad it will be only 15%, some divisions/departments will have 20%. We already had a 10% a few months ago.

There is a scheduled occupational declaration window in mid December, if the company determines that there is a force imbalance that requires layoffs.

In Legacy T, there is currently an accelerated 3 week VTP ¹ (volunteers needed) announcement involving 80 people, that is scheduled to conclude by the time of that mid December announcement. So, if they don't get the 80 volunteers in Leg T, I expect a surplus declaration in that business unit.

¹ Normally, VTP lasts a month.
