Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The Last 30 Days.....

So, this is what the media/government calls a "Booming, Best Ever Economy in America!" Layoffs ONLY IN THE LAST 30 DAYS, and for every layoff reported publicly, at least 10 happen quietly or without media attention.

Major layoffs have been going on for a year or two, but until it happens to you personally, you think everything is wonderful. Well kids, It ain't and this list proves it.

Bayer 12,000

GM 14,000

Wells Fargo 1000

Broadcom 2000

Bombardier 5000

Haagen Dazs 1000

This list doesn't include the constant bleeding of major corporations like At&T itself, Sears, Oracle, Intel, Qualcomm, and dozens more that see a dozen here, a dozen there go every week or two in order to fly under the radar and avoid media attention.

The housing market is rolling over, as is the auto sector, and if tens of thousands of layoffs in the past 30 days isn't enough proof for you, then maybe the downturn of America's two biggest industries might get your attention.

Denial will not stop this or pay your bills. Seeing the train coming and getting out of the way will though. Stop buying stupid stuff, stop trading in your car for a new one every 3-5 years. Those who prepare now will be extremely glad they did.

@8ggr so many weirdos in management don't understand that work isn't life. boomers aren't going to buck because they either have the free time (nothing better to do) or they're trying to hang on until retirement.

WoW. so just because someone is elderly but actually likes their job and actually likes to get up every morning and looks forward to going to work you suggest they should retire? I am in my late 30's and manage a very diverse Tech Team of which some of my Team are recent college grads and I also have some Baby Boomers in their late 50's and early 60's.....Comparatively speaking, I would keep the Baby Boomers on staff and let go of the college hires as there is no question about work ethic and enthusiasm for doing a good job with the Baby Boomers that I have on staff.....When I have a deadline or fire to put out and it is 5:00 on a Friday I can never seem to find the college grads but the Baby Boomers are available and always willing to pitch in if we have a weekend crisis to handle.....From my experience I would hire a Baby Boomer any day of the week.....

Just saw a Proctor & Gamble ad for job openings. At this particular point, due to the Trump deficit boost, there are more jobs than people. While particular industries might have their own adjustments to make, overall, the U.S. is short on employees.

Auto had a junk auto loan thing going in 2017, so once that played out, I didn't see anyone who wanted to buy a car not already making the purchase. So, in 2018, I thought there would be a pullback.

Bayer - who knows? The others - who knows.

Verizon found itself able to offer 25% of its workforce an offer to get lost. I own that stock, and I have to wonder, why were these people hanging around for so long. After all, the point of having an employee is that the employee, after being paid, renders value to the employer. In other words, an employer should need these employees, and any reductions like what Verizon is doing shows gross managerial incompetence.

So far, AT&T has been accomplishing their reductions through buyouts, etc. We'll see if that continues. There is a baby boomer component that should either retire, or die on the job. Dying on the job (due to old age) is failure to me.

"Stop buying stupid stuff, stop trading in your car for a new one every 3-5 years" is some very good advice. Is it a need or a want? Save your cash for the looming layoff...
