Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

IT outsourcing in nutshell

There is only one team leader per application. The rest of team is made up by Infosys. If you are in band 6, you will be safe for now until the next round. This is the model for IT transformation, but preserve the domain knowledge.

one of the classic items going on is the amount of people 'touching' production. Well people are working with production night and day because there's nobody to do the work. Everyone is wearing multiple hats. So go ahead VZ reduce access to systems and data and watch your Director kingdoms crash and burn. You have NO idea how badly systems are hanging on by a bare thread.

Went through this with Sprint and IBM a couple of decades ago...same songbook. They had done layoffs until they were at a skeleton crew level and then outsourced everything. A very large percentage took the layoff and all of that "tribal knowledge" walked out the door. It took 15 years for them to really recover (along with a huge cash infusion from SoftBank). Stand by for the pain...it's coming.

Yep this is what exactly happened under our VP. 1 manager with 1 SMTS and the rest went to infosys.

In multiple facets, Verizon IT has lost sight of the mission as it optimizes from a few specific vantage points. This is the first time that I'm really concerned about massive failures (people, technology, procedure) in the IT side of the house. But I am more confident on the security side, even if there is still quite a ways to go.

And Nortel. Look here they are now. Or should I say where they are NOT now.

"There are many applications with only one developer (read - domain knowledge) That model kind of falls apart in that scenario."

Yep -- things will "fall apart" all over the place. Ask the employees and former employees of Ericsson.
