Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Telecommuting -the trend is over

They’ve said it over and over - they are phasing out all corporate management remote workers. They do not owe anyone severance for making you come in to the office, remote work was a privilege and a perk. The trend is over. People far from hub locations will slowly be surplused and/or given the option to move (at their own expense). People currently near a hub will be required to be in the office all or most days per week. There is no secrecy about this, the VP’s and AVP’s have been forewarning people since at least last October.

This is so typical of AT&T , always follow the trend, even if that trend is backwards. This whole end WFH started with Marissa Meyer trying to save her sorry a-- Yahoo.

Then all the old blue chip companies, AT*T, IBM, were like" hey these new web 2.0 companies are abandoning wFH lets do the same", to get more out of our workers, totally knowing a percentage who structured their lives around WFH would be surplussed. Welcome to corporate America, now quit your b--ch and get back to work, upper mgmt needs to make their numbers, to collect their fat bonus checks..

No its not, you want me to work nights and days to keep your network running AND you want me in office.

Tell you what, if you force me to work in office. Find someone to work nights for you. Cuz after 5, its someone else's problem.

they won't fire you, you will just make some list of tele commuters up top and some exec will tell your boss you have to go in the next surplus round to meet the quota - just depends if they need to cut budget or not. it's like a lottery. same old story everywhere. your boss won't do jack to save you since they are trying to cover their own rear end.

Telecommuting is good for the company, it attracts good talent and has become, at least in IT, an industry standard.

It is interesting that the people opposed to telecommuting have no real arguments other than...this is what management tells use to do. Obviously these people are not doing much critical thinking so what is their value to the company other than repeating what management says.

After 15 years of telecommuting, I was forced back to MT. My India manager has no idea where I sit, I've not seen him or "collaborated" with anyone in my group. Others were sent to offices in Atlanta, Illinois & Florida. Everyday I'm in a different dirty, germ infested desk next to someone that I have to keep walking away from due to the odor. The restrooms are dirty, with signs asking to please use proper hygiene & not p--p on the floor. The faces of people there are sullen, there is no enthusiasm, no more "teamwork". I watch my on line time & at the stroke of 8 hours I shut down. Notice how long it takes your machine to power down, that's all those reports loading to go to the Cowboy corral to use against you. Shame on management for not staying on top of those who took advantage of WFH & ruining it for all. I will ride this out as long as I can, it's just a paycheck. This entire SAFe/agile/collaboration push is all BS, the only people buying into it are the a$$ kissers.

I left AT&Tin september 2015 due to a layoff. This us the same play being run in 2019. We were asked to reserve our office cubicles everyday. Add in paying for parking in midtown Atlanta. The place i work niw lets us telecommute. The office if you choose to go in has a Starbucks on site, 8000 square foot gym, etc.... why stay at AT&T?

Wondering how long it will take them to fire me for not coming in to the office. HR is so finicky about firings due to potential litigations. This may be an interesting experiment. I should you tube it! I’m NOT going into to a shared workspace with tweedle dee and tweedle dumb sitting beside me hosting conference calls without a headset or stinking due to lack of personal hygiene... every time I do go in it’s like working from a stinky Grey Hound bus terminal. Let’s not even get into the lack of restrooms and those who perform their ritual washings several times a day in the sinks or toilets! Diversity and inclusion?! Ha!

It’s not only a ‘privilege ‘ it just makes sense for so many positions! So I disagree with their decision and still not sure why the change. Part of this company is or was a mobility company. We pushed the ability to be mobile and work from anywhere. This is SBC way behind the times mentality. So good luck to this company as it continues to spiral out of control and god speed to those caught up in poor management and decisions. Yay for losing hours of productivity while sitting in traffic, working more with less resources and going back to 9-5 mentality! Good job SBC . You managed to destroy a once great company who had real leadership and vision.
