I decided to not to take the VSP offer. But I’m working on getting several certifications. You never know what will happen next November.

Don't know what jobs you guys do, but for mine, I wouldn't even be considered for my old job without a degree, regardless what kind of degree. I never set foot in a college and did my job quite well for 25 years but sitting in a classroom instead of real life experience is what they want now. Sure glad I don't need to worry about getting a job.

...though there are some very specific exceptions (i.e., cisco).
Problem is, a person with certifications can atill be a blithering, anti-social, numbnuts who nobody wants to work, or associate, with.
OP, with all due respect, IMHO, many certifications reflect one’s work ethic even lower than online college to those making hiring decisions.
Didn't click the button but found a new job. Putting my 2 weeks in next week, get my yearly bonus + vacation paid out and get to leave on my own date. My boss would have kept me until June for sure.
Certifications are great and all but if you sit on all of that wealth of knowledge without an idea of how to apply it in the industry, you are no different than the offshore firms.
I think it varies greatly on the level and position. Certifications are great is you just need a programmer who knows how to do X. But the problem is that there is also a great pool of people with the same certification available offshore or in an outsourcing company. With an advanced degree, you MIGHT be able to make the case that your knowledge and experience makes you a much better fit for jobs that are less cookie-cutter.
Of course, there are much fewer of those types of jobs than the "Need two years of AWS" type things!
Certifications are for mo--ns with too much time on their hands. How many certifications did Gates, Jobs, Bezos, or Zuckerberg have? Imagine how much more successful Gates would have been with a few certifications?
Certifications are viewed better than degrees in today's job market.
Certifications are skill-oriented so the employer gets exactly what they want. Employers search for staff with skill, not with a degree and certifications are always up-to-date.

Certifications will not save you from a RIF. Degrees won't either. Especially if you position is favorable to outsourcing.
What kind of certifications are you looking at?
I don’t believe certifications are viewed in the same light as degrees.
