Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Reality of the industry

As a former DirecTV technician and manager for a DirecTV contractor, it truly pains me to hear the amount of "wasted breath" on this site. For the record, I ONLY follow this site to see how my friends will, can, or may be affected.

First, if you have failed to plan for the industry changes currently taking place, shame on you! It's not like you didn't know changes were coming.

Second, shame on you for not being proactive and preparing yourself! Providing for yourself and your family is an individual responsibility.

Third, I am not sure how you come to the realization that ANY company owes you something besides a paycheck, there is no corporate loyalty. Regardless of industry.

Fourth, if you thought being a Union member in the Telecom industry was a benefit then you are a weak/unemployable asset.

Fifth, holding on for a pension/retirement is a great goal. Planning on your own terms is a larger measure for an individual.

Fortunately, I left the industry and am pretty successful. It took a couple years of prior planning and past skillset to make not happen.

Before you get p-ss-d, just ask yourself how your skillset translates to your paycheck. Don't get mad, reflect before you answer . Do you have a skillset outside of your current job to justify your current paycheck? For the majority, the answer is NO!

It's pretty easy to complain about what somone thinks is "FAIR" or "RIGHT" for their circumstance. At the end of the day, be REAL in your analysis of the current industry.

Current times (industry, economic, corporate) require that you look out for yourself, because no one else will.

I could go on, but most educated people will get the gist of this. I am not directing this toward any person or group. Time for the pity party is over. Be REAL, educate yourselves. Prepare ahead of time. If you are blind-sided, or are unprepared for the current state of your industry, I personally feel for you

Professionally, the the excuses for being unprepared are your individual cross to bear. It s---s, but so can life.

I remember a year or two ago on one of John Donovans town halls where he said there were too many people taking project management related training on PLE and not enough software/data analytics training..

The executives seem to miss the point that people generally would rather not have to re-tool themselves in a field they never worked in in order to remain relevant, especially a field where you basically need a 130 IQ and psychopathic work ethic to excel in, which software and data science are the epitome of.

It isn't the average, everyday worker at AT&T that should be blamed for the so called "skills-gap" at the company, just like it isn't the average, everyday worker in corporate America that should be blamed for the "skills-gap" on a national level. Rather, it should be the CEO and billionaire elite class burning at the stakes for ever having the nerve to force this technocratic Brave New World upon us in the first place.

The world needs to go back to the way it was in 1995 - the pinnacle of human civilization and culture and where most people didn't have to know how to operate a computer in order to thrive. Plain and simple. END OF STORY.

"Current times (industry, economic, corporate) require that you look out for yourself, because no one else will." So instead of putting more time, energy, and creativity into your job to get ahead.... Maybe, depending on what you want and where you are in your life, you’d actually be better off directing efforts into fulfilling career and personal priorities that you, not your employer, have set.....I think this is the mindset of a large majority of T employees currently. I see a lot more employees readily embracing the work and family balance these day's and lights out at 5:00PM or earlier...

It’s funny I know of a lot of successful companies that actually care about their employees and treat them well with respect!

AT&T isn’t one of them....

"Reality of the industry". That is fine. And I generally agree with your points. However, there are many of us that are tuned in to providing superior customer service, and we are longer allowed to do so. The way this company treats legacy customers, is disgusting. I REFUSE to treat these customers that at&t no longer cares about as trash.

OP, for the record I don’t believe you’re a troll, but your condescending attitude truly does come through in buckets. Gee ‘these are my credentials and look how much more I know than most of you.’ And only the “most educated people will” understand the “gist” what I’m preaching!

You wrote us a long dialogue (all the way up to #5 and beyond) and still you just couldn’t stop with your self righteous superiority. Everyone of us, no matter our individual reasons to stay, or leave, owes you a debt. But it’s certainly good to know that you have such a firm grip about the lack of our “skill set” (two words by the way) for the “majority” of us.

One last thought, wouldn’t it be easier to pick up the phone and call these “friends” to ask how they “will, can, or may be affected?” Most of what we all read here is rumor.

My post was not meant to be derogatory. It was a statement I felt may benefit someonee . If you are adversely affected by the current industry, I feel for you. Not a troll, just a realist. Trying to convey a lot lessons-learned that have benefitted many.

Again, no offense intended. My apologies if I hit nerve. Plan now, educate yourself. There is no corporate loyalty. Not sure how you translate this, but there is no corporate message involved, just life lessons from the current world. Best of luck to you my friend.

Happy New Year to all!

My comment about unions is directed to those who think their membership is a security blanket. Agree with the protections offered, but as anyone's end-all-be-all, plan for yourself and your family. Make yourself MARKETABE/HIREABLE. You decide that as an individual. Simply put, take ownership of your lot in life. You make the rules, not your current employer. Lots of opportunities, plan and take advantage of them AHEAD of time.

WP1foCF. Coming from DTV I’m not sure you’re qualified to comment on the telecommunications business as it pertains to AT&T. However, your comments are pretty spot on save #4. Union membership is an absolute benefit and while there may be an occasional “weak/unemployable” member, overall, union members make the company run. Coming from a management background I can see why you might have a negative view of a union though that’s not a universal opinion among management. As I said before your comments overall are completely valid and well said.
