I look at my colleagues these days and I see that the atmosphere has improved around the workplace, as people seem to be in a better mood after the whole buyout situation has been put behind us. Don’ get me wrong, It’s been refreshing to see that the morale is going up and that people generally seem happier, but what I generally recognize that this comes from an attitude towards the recent happenings like something that is behind us and is never going to happen again. I don’t want o sound pessimistic, but doesn’t anyone realize that this was just the beginning. VZ is a company that has the primary goal to cut costs and on top of that a company that is reorganizing. Will the new cuts come in a form of mandatory layoffs or maybe another package, it’s left o be seen, but the headcount is going to decrease in the very near future. In any case, think that some rough times are ahead of us.

Take control of your own destiny. Absolutely take advantage of the 6% 401K match, build up gradually to the max (up to 16% and if 55 or older catch up $6K on top of the 16%). For 401K, use before tax dollars (reduces your taxable income) or Roth (earnings are not taxable) depending on your age and financial situation. Keep your skills current and stay on top of the latest trends. Take advantage of training in the latest technologies. Keep your resume up to date. Start planning an exit strategy in the event you are rebadged or RIFd. The next buyout is not coming any time soon. The only reason for a buyout is to get rid of the older workers and not get sued for age discrimination. The last buyout was 15 years ago.
Not all slackers are gone, there are still some left
50% of the leftovers are slackers.
some slackers left or been shuffled. still plenty of people s---ing the teet
RIFs of the last 3 years? I see you've only been here for 3 years. We've been averaging a RIF or two basically every year for a long, long time.
To my fellow VSP brothers and sisters, I wouldn't be too concerned about the slacker comment that kicked off these responses. In the group I am in 50% pushed the button and were selected, albeit with differing release dates. Most all of them are top performers. There were a few who in my group who were afraid to push the button because they were not sure of how easy it would be to find another job. Many who pushed had another job lined up already. As far as slackers go, at least in IT, the RIFs of the previous 3 years should have eliminated most of them. I suspect the slacker comment that started this off is by a jealous person who wished they had taken advantage of the VSP but were too afraid.
I'm definitely not a slacker I wear 37 pieces of flair and try the hardest. I'm productive because I'm busy. I stay busy, that's my value.
I took the vsp and I’m def not a slacker I’ve had the number 1 scorecard amongst 12 peers in my office for 3 years straight and the number 4 scorecard of over 50 for the last 3 years as well. I didn’t run from the job. I left because of lack of leadership. I pray for all of your left behind. Your workloads are getting bigger atleast in my lob. They are only backfilling half of us that are leaving.
Most of the slackers stayed. Where else can they get a gig that pays what they get for doing what they do? There are some that jumped at the big payout, but most saw that they can't do anywhere close to what they have anywhere else. So they stayed. Maybe they'll be the ones to get riffed next time.
slackers? Well, if that’s the case, they got rid of the slackers, then no ones workload should increase because you’ve been doing their work all along. Nothing to worry about then right?
Next time it'll be even easier, I've heard they're bringing Temple Grandin in to re-imagine the UX of unemployment transition.
my team had at least 3 slackers
wake up around 9 take kids to school, log in around 10-10:30 shoot out an email to look busy
maybe leave the house maybe don't
back by 3 to pick up the kids
@kfy slackers? Lol, we’ll see, I predict you'll eat that foolish opinion sooner than you think.
Its always good to have some level of certainity
Um, morale may seem better but let’s face it, those if us still here are going to do more with less yet again. Not a morale booster by any means. Most are relieved because it’s defined when people are leaving but the new reality hasn’t been lived yet!
Slackers are gone!
