Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Finance Layoffs in 2019

Finance had a voluntary layoff in November and now looking at involuntary layoffs to hit early 2019. Any word on timing and how many? They lost some critical people in the voluntary and now promoting a few to director level after demoting several to single contributors. Word is span of control goes to 10 in January- any verification of that and the reorg to get there which will be significant?

There are going to be massive layoffs in 2019 at AT&T during the 2nd & 3rd Qtrs. Upwards of 30% (85k employees) and another 15k-35k in 2020. Get your big pants on boys & girls, it’s going to be a bumpy ride...according to my VP it’s going to be a blood bath this year. AT& T has signed contracts with about 10 different companies at the end of 2018 to outsource most call center, network support and remote hands for data centers along with customer installation through Mastec. Soon AT&T will just be a front for dozens of other companies behind the scenes who actually do the work.

The more skilled and highimpact jobs need attention because one small mistake causes high dollar loss. Drinks in the manual labor and unskilled have little impact financially and on house wife type manager can guide 30+ with no problem. Usually the biggest issue is getting the dinks to come to work on time

Maybe finance will do like the rest of the company and force relocations again to get people off the books.

Some areas of finance also lost many employees due to forced relocations in 2018. I would expect layoffs to happen in mid-January; off payroll by 3/31. Take the time to get your stuff ready if you think you have any chance of being impacted.

The distinction of focused and distinct vs. unskilled doesn't make any sense for managers. Usually skilled labor requires LESS supervision. Not more. What kind of people are running our finances that more oversight of highly skilled positions makes sense?

Same logic applies to other unskilled positions like customer service, inside sales, credit and collection. One manager an handle 20 to 30 because they all do same work all day every day

It's 8 in finance with lots of exemptions. We are involved in all operations of the company and set most rules impacting expenses. Finance jobs are specific and focused. Manual labor jobs like prem techs and tech ops are generic, basic and similar so one manager for 30 works

Span of control has been 10 for years. How in the world did Finance exempt themselves from this cost cutting strategy? You guys should be replaced by Excel badges and online training for the rest of us.
