Layoff Strategy when One Year from retiring

I want to work one more year and retire end of 2019. I want a strategy for exploiting this severance package deal to my advantage so I get paid 6 months in 2020 and financially ease into retirement. 1. If I show my hand early to my boss do I risk getting severed early in 2019?

  1. What is the best time and approach to talk to my boss or should I take another approach like start slacking mid year?

It's hard to plan not knowing when each round is planned in secrecy.

Any thoughts on strategy so I can get out around Dec 2019 or 1Q 2020 with a package?

Thanks for all the good advice. I reached the modified rule of 75 and have been looking at the retirement benefits and close to 65, Medicare age, which is why looking to stay through year end. I have a skill/knowledge in short supply ?automation) so the more they layoff the more valuable I am.... Thanks for all the good advice and any new posts as well on pitfalls to avoid as I navigate the minefield before sliding into home

Do your work and pray you aren’t hit in April or June 2019. You’ll be lucky if you didn’t get it then. I lost my position June 16 and haven’t found a thing to keep me going other than draining my 401k to stay afloat as a temp. Not old enough to retire on what I had. The group I’m in lost 8 or 10 people in two separate area manager lines this last Friday. 10 days before Christmas. How is that for a holiday gift?? They don’t care st the VP level cause they have hearts of coal and sleep on beds of gold.

Say nothing.

Fly low, smile and wave.

Plan.

Try to run 'em out of $$$$ in the mean time.

You owe them nothing....nor they you.

Start lowering your performance, then anything happens after August take it and run. You need to log onto benefits and work thru the retirement excerises so you know what things cost cause health insurance and supplemental life go up lots. Also that $10 directv deal goes away, and that package will cost ya $130. Wireless monthly goes to 30%. I would take first deal that comes along. Start looking for ideas for work after you leave if needed.

You definitely do not want your boss to know that you are willing to go. She will ride you like a pony for the next year knowing that you have no other options. Best choice is to hide in plain sight and be the most dedicated employee untill next years voluntary offers come through.

Take disability leave for mental illness until you reach the rule of 75

I have the same plan. I'm not telling them anything. If another layoff happens in my part of the nut house any time after March, I'll let them know then I'd be willing to go. Even if they're not formally taking volunteers, it's in their interest to make it work once they understand that if they don't I'll continue to go through the motions, but basically I'll be doing the dead man's float until the next go around. The last thing they want to deal with is someone who has stopped pretending to be busy. Remember, once you're 52 or over you're a protected minority in the eyes of EEOC (even if you're a white male). so it's not that easy to get rid of you without leaving the company open to a claim of age discrimination.. When you reach the point at which you don't need the job any more, you're actually holding a strong hand in dealing with them.

If you are retirement eligible, which I presume you are, there is the MTP program (management transition plan) which allows you to become a retiree if you are laid off and are with 24 months of the rule of 75.

This allows you to get free basic life insurance and access to medical and dental plans (at rates higher than employees) but better than market’s. Also allows you 30% discount on ATT services such as mobile.

In return you would have to forfeit half of the severance package.

While waiting for this, focus on getting certifications by outside organizations.

In HR's eyes, as soon as you start taking about retirement, you're retired.
