Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Number set for direct reports.

Managers are to have 11 to 15 direct reports to justify their position. After the voluntary separations it is going to be difficult to justify the current number of managers. How will Verizon address this situation? First quarter of 2019 will be interesting.

@qrz The rule is referred to as span of control. Snr Managers and Managers are both band 6. One can be an individual contributor at Manager, those with HR responsibilities, ie, managing people, are Snr Managers. Equation from there is pretty simple, loose people and drop below the arbitrary line Snr’s are Snr’s no more.

Looks like there is real opportunity to save some more money. Sr. Managers salary, bonus, benefits, and most in the field have a vehicle. Each one would be a substantial savings, and with head count reduction and all the new tools and the fast desk, it's possible to do more with less.

We are losing enough managers for this not to be a big issue.

They did this back in 2003(?) after RIFs - middle management took the hit - if a manager didn't have required amount of direct reports at that time they were either canned or they lost their manager title. That was then, who knows now. I'll be gone and it won't matter. It's been a good 17 years mostly, the last 5 not so much.

who made this rule? You can perfectly be a Sr. Managers, with no direct reports. Your job duties define your role , not how many people report under you!

My Associate Director has just two direct reports and they are one Sr. Mgr and one Mgr. The Sr. Mgr has 3 reporting to him and the Mgr has 4. So we have an Asso Director over a department of just 9 resources and 2 of the 9 are managers. Wonder if HR will allow this management ratio to continue?
