Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Now they calling layoff AT&T employees for interview....Too little too late

I been layoff from AT&T two years ago this month. After being layoff with a severance payment they took a lot of taxes out and six month of benefits I had to pay out of my pocket along with doing two temp jobs I finally found full employment with Express Scripts, a company I tried to get in before my last day at AT&T in July 2017. After being with Express Scripts going to my second year being comfortable with my job and looking into moving up within the company or wating for management opening, I got a voicemail and text message on a Friday from AT&T HR calling from Mississippi. The HR person on the people ask if I was interested in the position for Call Center Sales Representative in Kirkwood, MO. I worked there before as a Service Representative with more than ten years experience.

The rep was thinking like was still unemployed or working temp job like this was a take it or leave and have I come in Monday for a interview. I told her I can come in Wednesday my off day to ask questions at the interview because the hourly rate was $10 dollars which was unbelievable for union wage position? She said I have to come Monday, there was no Wednesday available. I declined and hung up the phone. I get a call the following Wednesday from the same HR person asking if I can come today for a interview in Kirkwood. I told I have service my car for maintenance today.

My point is it this. Why would I quit a full time position that only takes me 9 minutes to get to work and already settled in my department and looking forward to working there for the next ten years until I retire to going back to AT&T when I worked for 18 years trying to survive each quarter with layoffs so they could find a position in the St. Louis Area for me with the same mentality in HR department to give me opening in KC to either take it or get layoff.

Me and other former AT&T employees would like to go back to our old positions with the same pay scale and good benefits but not going back to low pay like you are hire off the street. They should give the opportunity to negotiate your pay and be given priority over new people with no experience. They should offering to AT&T/CWA employees who are getting layoff this opportunity to work there instead trying to new people for low pay.

If the person was union represented, there is a 6 month and 3 year layoff bridge under many contracts. If one is rehired within 6 months, all service is bridged, including the period of layoff. 3 year, service is immediately bridged, but doesn't include the time the person is off-payroll.

If the person is non-represented, I don't know what the deal is.

The 6 month bridge may be applicable to all rehires, because I believe it involves pension law.

The 5 year bridge is for those who left on their own accord, and later on get rehired.

I could wrong, but it may take you five (5) years to get your former time bridged. So you should ask where you think you may be with company in 5 years?

Why would you even consider it? Did you miss the toxic work environment?

Why do you think they are laying off so many people. so they can call them back for less money. Especially former BellSouth employees.

"I been layoff from AT&T two years ago this month. " ..."my last day at AT&T in July 2017. "

I may be a little slow in math, but I'm not seeing how you pinned 2 years down to the month if your last day was July 2017.

Anyhow, if your were a prior Union employee, rehire and bridging should be in your contract. One thing to be aware of is, if you have separated from the company and are "rehired", you may be out of the running insofar as pursuing retiree health benefits are concerned. If this is a rehire under a Union contract, check with your union as to what wages and so forth is to be expected.

Look at it from the business perspective ; leave all feelings and emotions aside. Its a money based decision. The company is looking at this from a pure numbers position. After all, we are in it for the profit. Its not Unicef.
