Reduced severance

Rumor is severance benefits will be cut from 6 months to now only 3 months. Can anyone confirm this?

My termination was on 7/31. I received my severance check in September, about six weeks after my last day on payroll. I changed my tax deductions to reflect what I qualified for rather than 0. Check is taxed at commission or bonus check levels. Unpaid vacation is also taxed at that level.

I just applied for UI because I was told no payments can be issued while you are on Severance. Since mine doesn’t expire for two more months, I have to wait. I qualify for another 26 weeks of UI. Depending on your state, you will qualify for help with resume writing, LinkedIn, interviewing skills, etc. Take advantage of these programs. Since I decided to open my own business (thank you AT&T for the startup cash), I qualify for other programs. Check that out. Think about your plan....having AT&T on your resume means a lot in the outside world. You have a lot of skills to share in your local community. Be ready to put your plan into action.

Now for a word of caution. Make sure you pay your first COBRA payment and confirm it posts to your account. AT&T cashed my first payment, but never applied to my account and said I never paid it (despite providing documentation). I have filed a claim with Dept of Labor as no attorney will fight AT&T.

Everyone is in my thoughts - good luck!

@azrp - Are you currently collecting unemployment benefits from Texas even though you received severance pay from AT&T? TWC is currently reviewing my unemployment claim to determine my eligibility based on the severance I received. They told me typically you are ineligible if you receive severance until the end of the severance payment duration (in our case half a year). You can file another claim after 6 months if you are still unemployed.

I too was told that I would exhaust my benefits before I find a job and had to go into the Workforce Solutions office to match jobs with my profile.

Laid Off in Texas- I received severance and I am also drawing weekly unemployment from Texas up to 26 weeks. In Texas: apply for benefits the first week following your final day on payroll. AT&T approved the claim in 4 days- they also tell the TWC you will be receiving income from AT&T in a few weeks in the form of severance. Severance means different things to different companies. What TWC is looking for is "wages in lieu of notice" and TWC verifies what type of severance your are receiving. Since we are given notice of separation, the type of severance we receive does not disqualify you from unemployment benefits.

I understand different states have different qualifications- like you must exhaust your severance before unemployment will begin to pay.

On a side note- unemployment is at a 49 year low and Texas has 289,319 job postings on the Work in Texas site. I have been contacted every week and had to appear at the office twice to match jobs to my profile. Apparently I am at risk to exhaust benefits before I find a job, meaning 20% less than what I made is more money than most of their job offerings.

For those wanting more info on severance. I recieved my severance (6 mos) on 11/21 via EFT. I thought AT&T was going to cut a live check. Got the pay stub via USMail on 11/24. Looks like @ 35% taxes was taken from my severance as well as 2 weeks worth of medical benefits and LTC which I question if either should be deducted. The company had my medical paid up thru 10/31. I paid out of pocket for Medical & LTC premiums for Nov & Dec. In Jan 2019 I begin pension and medical will be automatically deducted from pension.

Severance pay is just another paycheck. Cash it, and only then file for unemployment insurance when it suits you. AT&T won't appeal your UI claim as your termination was involuntary whether you volunteered for it or not.

I was recently surplussed and retirement eligible - currently collecting UE benefits at max amount per week - my boss kinda laughed and did not think I WOULD receive severance, UE and retirement benefits. Of course I knew this to be a fact due to close friends previously in same situation. I have not received severence once received will not be able to claim UE benefit for only that ONE WEEK. HAHA LOL to my former boss

Dumb post. Dumb rumor. Inaccurate info in post (severance is not “at” 6 months; for management it is capped there, it goes down with less than 15 years service).

Most states won’t let you collect unemployment until your severance pay period ends so they may keep severance as is to avoid increased unemployment costs

Oh I'm sure there are some union contracts that have that included. If you are manager, you will have to wait on the email from One Stop with link to some new severance agreement to review.

Let’s get this straight, you want someone to confirm a "rumor?"

Would be funnier if they paid 3 months severance in cash, and 3 months in company stock. The worse our performance, the more stock and dividends you get!

The severance plan has not changed. It is still on hronestop. Up to 50% of your salary with enough time (13 or more years)

Easy money to support debt and save dividend will come from the slaves pockets, through layoffss and overall benefit reductions, only makes sense.
