Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T is looking to reduce the headcount by 2020.

I was just surplussed and took the lump sum last month. I would not post a company email on this site so I can see why no one wants to do that. It is just unethical. But if some on this board think the company isn't looking to lower the number of employees than I think you should re-think this. Vision 2020 is about reducing the workforce 33%. When my 2nd level talked to me on my final day he said there will be more of this and it could accelerate as well. I was an Equipment Engineer in the West and worked in OSP Engineering. I see further layoffs and feel they will be more in number. They are doing a very good job getting fiber out there just about everywhere they can so the need for Construction and Engineering will lessen. I don't say this because I want people laid off, since they were good friends, but it is just the way the business is going.

I would think that those that can retire should really think about it. The first offer was just the lump sum and severance pay. I wanted to work 1 more year but I also got tired of always being told to be on a call to see if our group was safe. It just gets old after a while. The thing that makes me think the most is that I was swamped with work and was #1 in productivity. But I was the oldest with the most years so I'm sure I was also making the most. Just my opinion though. Best of luck to all.

This is a post that I took from another thread ( @W2wTpjF-5nui ). I know the company is looking to reduce the workforce, but never thought it could be on such a big scale as the OP claims ( 33% by 2020). Does anyone know anything more about this?

You are not the only person feelings it, especially when I had worked 27/4 a week, days and nights, taking emergency calls over (25) years as a manager. I agreed that since PacBell to SBC then AT&T, there’s no rewards to employees when they are “loyalty, hard worker, etc...”. Upper management just wanted awards to themselves only. That’s is why I spent my personal money to reward my employees and treated all my AT&T sons. Most of all I feel good because these techs know there’s someone cares. I understand perfectly.

@77lqg - what org did you work in? That also happened to quite a few people in ATO last January. Don’t know why they want everyone in Dallas - it’s over full - there’s even a wait list for access to the parking garage.

I was a management employee for just under 20 years (19 years, 10 months). ALWAYS had exceeding reviews from every one of my supervisors. Had just received a $10k raise, and 11% bonus in 2018. But then in july 2019, was hit with a 60 day notice, and no placement unless i was willing to relocate to Dallas, TX!!!! NO LOYALTY FOR AMAZING, HARD WORKING, GENUINE, SMART, AWARDED, DEDICATED EMPLOYEES!!!!!!!! UNREAL! THIS CORPORATION IS GREEDY!!!!! NO LOYALTY TO THEIR HEART FELT, LOVING... AND LOVED EMPLOYEES!!!!!! THEY ARE UNBELEIVABLY GREEDY AND SO COLD..... HEARTLESS!!!!!!!

By the end of Jan 2020 a 12 percent surplus will be underway...this has been confirmed by high level sources. The Layoffs will be across the board affecting all levels.
Folks with 20 years in get 6 months of severance salary, all will receive a 60 day notice and unemployment when they walk out the door.
Health insurance is the difficult thing for most folks as most are too young for medicare eligibility and Obamacare is not affordable.
T is poised for great things in the near term, albeit with a much smaller workforce and thanks to the affordable healthcare act, a much younger workforce.

I worked for ATT 39years. Started with Western Electric as an Installer. Best job in the world. That is until divestiture when they decided to change the "corporate culture". IE; create 2 separate classes of employees. Craft and Management. Prior to that craft was respected. After that craft was treated as a thief to be watched and not trusted.
ATT promoted 2 new phrases, "Need to Know and Perception is Reality"
Fast forward to 2005. ATT management due to "diversity" promoted incompetent managers simply because they were female. They were now run by id–ts who did not understand the business. Eventually with 800# portability (which they missed), startups were taking market share and there was talk of ATT folding.
SouthWestern Bell was invited to purchase ATT and they did. They bought the company and the name.
SWBell took no time in establishing itself in the same manner as a new warden at a prison. They created several object lessons by singling out the most active and vocal ATT employees and targeting them with discipline for contrived offenses.
I could continue to document SWBs actions against legacy T employees however it would take days and I would rather put the abuse behind me.
I advise any current employee to NOT believe a word from a managers mouth. They are not the be trusted with your welfare.
ATT will layoff American Employees and move the work to where it is already. The Philippines, Brazil, India, Brno Czechoslovakia, Mexico, Singapore
There is NOTHING AMERICAN about ATT anymore

Another thing to consider is preparing yourself to be ready for a surplus. There has been a long-standing track record of layoffs at AT&T. Getting to Rule of 75 is something way different than in the past.

If you possess a skill that is in high demand you’ll likely be retained, if you have the same skills as a lot of people - look out.

Folks, this is easy; it’s all about math! As employees age they cost more as they make more$ and are not as healthy by and large as their 20-30 something counterparts who are cheaper to employ, aren’t going to get a pension and are likely more productive. The counter argument is experience make one more valuable but if 2 can be hired for the cost of 1 - look out....

I wish all a great holiday season!

According to a conference call between the CFO and JP Morgan on 12/5, they said that they are planning to reduce payroll by 4% in 2020. Out of 240,000 employees worldwide, that will be close to 10,000 emplyees...last week a sales team in my office was eliminated.

I was an ATT retail employee moved to IHX department(should have never taken it). I can honestly say I’m happy to NOT be a part of att. I finally swapped over to Verizon and the service difference is really uncanny. You folks that work for them and will defend them until you die are really mistaken. I’ve watched them allow a certain level of fraud and discipline others that commit fraud. It really goes to show you that the folks that are smooth and operate in that gray area get promoted. The folks that make the wheel turn get the big bucks while the front line gets sh– on. Feel free to attack me for my beliefs but in the back of your mind you see the same stuff. Att is not looking out for you and owe you nothing more than the pay check you earn. Folks that live out of their cars and move around for the company can be replaced with a snap and not two sh–s given. Live in your fake worlds Execs, Director’s, Arsms.

The irony is AT&T will still need customers, and they're leaving by the droves. Great job Randy.

Like I have said prior... American Telephone and Telegraph is NO MORE. Randall and his highly paid crew are all in a cloud and could care less about the future of what used to be a great American company. He has ruined the lives of thousands of good hard working people. I'd like to see him make it on the wages that are out there now. And I cannot wait till he has to call about his service and get someone that cannot speak a word of English.

Nothing new here. Move along. The company has publicly stated they could lay off up to 30% back in 2016. The only people surprised are those who don’t follow industry news.

This round is called "Project Collaboration". No "collaboration" to it. Just a way to force people to leave or retire without calling it a surplus.

I worked at Att for 10 years- our regional president told us in 2013 they wanted retail employees to register every customer on the myatt app so customers could complete all of their transactions on their phone. You did not have to read between the lines..

Stephenson danced around the 30% reduction figure in this NY Times article from Feb 2016: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/14/technology/gearing-up-for-the-cloud-att-tells-its-workers-adapt-or-else.html "..Mr. Stephenson declined to project how many workers he might have by 2020, when the cloud-based system is supposed to be fully in place. One thing about cutting people in an aging work force, he noted, is that “demography is on our side.” Other senior executives say shrinking the work force by 30 percent is not out of the question..."

These numbers are accurate. You will need to reference this article when you submit for unemployment. I questioned why the number were reported at 269k people up from 250k people year over year. I remembered the numbers include the TW acquisition. Just looking at Legacy teams, I suspect the numbers are closer to 225k.

If you do get notice or are able to chose to go on your own, it’s pretty amazing on the “outside”. I was let go in July and I just celebrated opening my own business. You own your future.

In 2015, AT&T Reported 281,450 Employees (After DTV Purchase). Today, we have 269,280 (Q3 Quarterly Earnings Report) which is actually up from 2017 (254,000).

The goal was 33%, from roughly 280,000 employees. Should end up with around 200,000 by 2020. Percentages impacted wont really change, but the number of people released in each surplus cycle will go down as we get closer to the end goal.
