Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VSP thinkers

They are trimming - it will pop very soon. Reconsider 1/2 your 401k is stock. Benefit like VP and above will. Also, shareholders are cared about more than employees - they will not miss a quarterly number for years

You can look at Ericsson to see how the stock will perform. You've got another 4-5 Quarters where it may look good as the entropy from the huge employee loss will not have made an impact. After that, the loss of intellectual capital will catch up to the stock.

Even without the VSP, there would have been massive disruption as the company moves to VZ 2.0. You can look at other stocks where consolidation occurs. There is often an initial bump when announced, followed by a decline as the organizations merge, followed by normalization. Can't predict how long each phase is, but the pattern is there.

Whether it tanks soon or not (or ever) doesn't alter the reasons why you should never overload on your company stock. If you are overloaded, and think (as it is!) the price is pretty high, it's a good time to sell and rebalance.

For everyone who believes that my company is the one that will way-outperform the broader market, there are a lot who end up disappointed. And in the worst case, without a job,

irm - It may or may not drop from where it is now. But don't expect the buyout $ total itself to effect the price much one way or the other. It barely moved when the quarterly report was issued that included the cost of the payouts from the last big package in 2003. It was listed as a "One time charge" and pretty much ignored... stock continued to go up from where it was for a few months, but stayed in the pretty tight range it was in at the time (like usual)

1Q profit will take a hit due to severance, for starters.

I don't think it'll tank, but IMHO it'll drop 8-10%

continued layoffs and decent performance per quarter should push this stock. Please explain why you think that it will tank.

Enron, WorldCom etc were cooking the books so please do an apple/apple comparison

The way giving a sell order in the 401k s---s... I knew 46 was low, and 58 seems high, so I'll watch to see if it's a good day to get out today. In the last 6 months, VZ stock has been my best performer.

I'm getting out of them company, so my money should, too...

Correct, just ask folks that worked for WorldCom, Enron, Toys R Us, Montgomery Ward, Sears, and oh yeah GE why you do not invest most or all of your savings in the company you work for.

I learned from the WorldCom debacle, 0% of my 401K is in VZ stock. It’s all about diversification.

Around 10% of my 401k is Verizon stock. It's good as a defensive component but with the market run for the past decade, no reason to be defensive.

However. Now that things are slowing down I may let it ride. Then again, my days of receiving VZ stock will hopefully be over Dec 28.

Verizon stock has traded mostly in a fixed range for ages. Best time to get out is at the high end of the historical range.

Or you could let it ride on Hans' investments in new technologies paying off in the billions of dollars a few years from now. Or for Verizon 5G Cable TV to become "a thing"? But cable TV is dying. Wow, having you 401K tied up all these years made you miss out on a good market :(

"Why would you ever have half your 401k in Verizon stock? Am I missing something?"

Right, investing 101 always warns against this. You do not want to have a large investment in your company stock because if things go badly for the company, you can lose your job and all your 401(k) savings.

I'm at 40% since it was at 46 I increased from 20%.

Wondering at what price I should get out.
