Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

You are in for a long bumpy road

As a former employee of Verizon and being in the industry for 46 years I think it's easy to say that nothing will be the way it is today. I was laid off from Ameritech in 1993 after 23 years, Alltel bought out 360 and I was gone again, Lucent then evaporated and I was on the street again, US Cellular sells the Chicago Market and again I'm staring over at 60 years old spending my last years at Verizon. Anyone who can retire and get any benefits should consider themselves lucky. My best to those just entering the industry .... you are in for a long bumpy road.

There's no such thing as a free college education. Someone has to pay for it, and I sure as heck am not in favor of paying 40% income tax so that some brat can get a psychology degree just to end up making my coffee.

Our public education system is where it needs to start. Instead of throwing more of everyone else's money at a problem, let's look at where our money is already going and figure out how to fix it there.

College cost isn’t the only thing.

In the US someone can get an education even up to a PhD and not have useful skills for any job.

In China and Japan education is about advancement.

I agree with OP. Reality hasn't been sinking in to some. The Indians and Chinese will out win and outpace our American kids of next generation. College is getting expensive, kids want to go to college but can't afford it. So how are our american kids going to get ahead of the Chinese and Indians if education is so expensive? Make college education free or close to free and our kids will be able to go to college, learn, and progress. Then can they make america great again. As long as education is not affordable, the only ones who will make america perhaps great is the foreigners coming into this country.

Is that the smallest violin in the world I hear playing? Should we huddle together and sing spirituals? If you make more than 30k you're a 1%er to the rest of the world...starving, privation, struggling - get over yourself.
