Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

My individual break even date is 1/17/2020

I've done the calculations for my personal situation. I've been with the various companies that are now Verizon for 21 years. I plug that in plus 4 weeks of vacation I have accrued, add the STI bonuses, and then add in the healthcare benefit for the duration of coverage. I then look at the 'standard' RIF package(as outlined in the FAQs, while not guaranteed they do mention the 'recent standard'), add in my vacation, and then do calculation of the cost of non-provided healthcare(single, no kids), and then add in max unemployment benefit for 26 weeks. When I plug all of that in, it comes out that if I still had my job around 1/15/2020, that would be my break even date. Any RIF before that I'd be better off taking the package, any RIF after that I'd be better off taking the current package(assuming the 12/28 date).

I see a lot of people here deciding to stay, assuming they will get another year in and assuming the 35 weeks severance. I think that very soon severance will be changed to 30 days (probably after this buyout is done) and a sale of wireline is in the not so distant future. Read the tea leaves!

Unemployment may not be granted. That depends on the State. This is a VOLUNTARY program.

Don't forget to calculate in that the COBRA you can only take for 18 months max.

If you are eligible to retire (years of service > 15 and age + years of service >= 73), then you get access to the retiree rate for health insurance which you can take as long as you want, but that's almost double the cost of the COBRA. Still might be a better deal than the surviving the tender mercies of the individual health insurance market.

Really, it would only be 25 week difference? So if you survive you would get sti in 2018 ( maybe not 100%) and make it until July or so and get let go you would get 35weeks plus 2019 sti, since you will he into 2019. That should break even, not sure what you mean by healthcare. Paying healthcare after 35weeks?

I can certainly be wrong and hope not but it's not that bad if you stick around and survive 6 months or more. You also wont have all the competition if it's time in 2019.

Oh well hard choice either way..

My calculations are based on me sitting on my couch. I'm all done with telecom, and all done with Corporate America. I'll walk some dogs if I get bored or want some spending cash added to my coffers.

If you're able to find another job within the first 3 months at most likely for most people will be half their current salary, you'll really be way ahead. Of course the lower salary will sooner or later start to sting if you're not set up for it.
