Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

People here work only to retire!

One thing has become extremely clear. People here at VZ work only to retire. This is like a government organization. Work for donkey years, no motivation to do anything and then just retire, after a comfortable life. No wonder there is no engineering culture here!!

All this outrage after working for decades in one company shows that there’s absolutely zero exposure to what’s happening outside!!

Before the dot.com bust new offices were opening and one could move easily within the company and advance.

But then the bottom fell out and buildings were closing, nothing but consolidations. Job reqs were frozen and no one could move around like in the past, and the RIFs started in earnest.

It created a culture wherein people were hanging on by their fingertips with no place to go, so they stayed longer, getting incremental raises, but no real opportunity for upward career growth. A “job opening” became a rare luxury, they used vacancies for RIFs where they could.

If someone thinks we didn’t want to move then you weren’t there... there was no place to go.

So we stayed.

As soon as you're born they make you feel small

By giving you no time instead of it all

Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school

They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool

Till you're so f'n crazy you can't follow their rules

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years

Then they expect you to pick a career

When you can't really function you're so full of fear

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and s-x and TV

And you think you're so clever and classless and free

But you're still f'n peasants as far as I can see

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they're telling you still

But first you must learn how to smile as you kill

If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be

A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me

If you want to be a hero well just follow me

@1gor, that’s a stupid lesson.

Thank God NASA, the military, and medical professionals don’t practice it.

No one would have tho opportunity to become expert in anything.

"People here work only to retire!"

You mean after working for decades and reaching retirement age. How dare they!

Engineering culture? Basking Ridge is known for 3rd tier suits stuck in the 1980s

Move the headquarters to Silicon Valley or Seattle if you care about engineering

If I had a pension, like I did when I was hired, I’d be retired now. Thanks for nothing Denny and Ivan.

I was hired over 20 years ago on a 1 year contract. I had no idea it would last this long, and was taught at college that the days of working for one company until you retire were OVER.

Been one helluva ride.

What's wrong with working for retirement??? Of course, I work to have a comfortable, financially secure retirement. Have you ever heard of CDMA. Well, we worked really smart during the CDMA days. There was real excitement during those days. But now, all the greedy executives decided they want the millions of dollars in their own pocket and decided to give away the USA technology to China (practically) for free. Now China going to be way ahead of any other country as far as technology is concerned and there government/CEOs aren't as greedy cause everything is controlled by the government. So yah, I do work to retire. And what's so wrong with that!!! I worked (smart and hard) for many many years and am continuing to work hard these days working during weekends with no pay. I'm tired of working now cause the moral is low, the future of the company is unknown, there is no five year strategy, executives change at the rate you flip pancakes, more and more jobs are going to China, India, Low wage European countries, Low wage Asian countries, etc. So what's so wrong with working just to retire now since I worked and am working still my buttock off.

OP, ever hear of, Westinghouse, Bell Labs...

Don’t try to school me youngblood in what’s a proper “engineering culture”.

We were light years beyond you tenderfoots in terms of innovation, all the more amazing considering the scientific restraints of the times, prior to the true dawn of the computer age, where calculations were not done by machines in second or minutes.

With the tools we had, we are Einsteins compared to an ignoramus such as yourself that takes potshots and tries to diminish the great accomplishments of those who came before.
