Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Arison offered voluntary layoffs on 10/1/2018

The offer must be accepted by 10/22. Last day is Nov 15. Standard severance package applies. Offer to L 1-4 managers. Lump sum pension offer to some legacy wireline. Offer states get a better lump sum calculation before rates are adjusted in Nov for 2019

or you can turn the offer down and just waste more of your life there until they decide to kick you out for no legitimate reason at a random time to be determined later. it's like love, it will happen when you least expect it.

Take the offer - t is toxic

Leave if you have the opportunity

The bargained for health care benefit must be significantly better than the management one. Because the high deductible management health care is not worth fussing over. You can probably do just as well on the open market. Thankfully I am on my spouse's medical benefit plan; another large company but a significantly better and cheaper family plan.

@2iez

I hear you. I was in the same boat, but I was occupational and union. That arrangement salvaged my career and retirement.

I see people dissing the unions on this blog. But, the number one job of the union is to see to it that its people are treated fairly. It doesn't matter what company one works for, that is the primary function.

The result was, I should be rehired, without consideration that if I was rehired, I would make it to retirement, and more importantly, retiree health benefits.

Losing a bit of altitude, I am extremely, extremely happy I can enroll with something that will protect me from bankruptcy over health matters.

It's nice to think that some people can retire later, but, AT&T, with the CWA gave me the option of concentrating on health as job number one.

@1ovw Sorry about your layoff, but kudos to you for having your priorities straight and taking care of your parents. I hope things work out for you. Get a lawyer and see if you can at least force AT&T to pay for you to move back near your family. I don't care what anyone says, AT&T owes you something for 21 years of service--even if it's just a little dignity.

@VrPN88i-1lwg The whole idea of laying off people close to retirement is that the company saves on a big salary and benefits, plus doesn't have to pay out the full retirement package. If the person is hired into another position, AT&T loses those savings. And we all know AT&T is all about saving money to add "shareholder value."

1lwg- You're assuming that you would be hired. Most of the older employees that I have known over the last several years that found themselves surplussed were not hired for another internal gig despite applying for dozens of them.

If I only had four months to go and no family in my current location, I would probably take a job elsewhere, rent somewhere for 4 months, and lock in that post-retirement health benefit.

@1kat- I feel for you in this circumstance. That said, what you have described is not uncommon from what I have seen. I have been here 24 years and over the last couple years that these surplus events have been going on, many of those that I have seen surplussed were in a similar situation as you, where they had not been at work regularly for whatever reason; be it FMLA, disability, whatever. I think in this situation the company kind of views those folks as low hanging fruit, easy decision. Best of luck to you going forward.

I wonder how many people in surplus do get another position internally. From what I’ve seen it seems to be a game with some on the good list getting help to go elsewhere for positions not on career path. A lot on career path seems to be aimed for external candidates and ignored internally.

wow some of the messages on this board are cruel. for the person who took care of elderly parents, WAY TO GO, you are a great person for doing that. the people scorning you are scum of the earth. I hope you get a job soon, what happened to you at ATT is horrible.

@1zio Yeah, he hasn't worked in two years, the lazy bum. I mean, how hard can it be to take care of two old people? His job should have come before his family. I mean, all his parents did was raise him, support him, help him through school, gave him a decent start in life ... It's not like he owes them anything, right? I sincerely hope when you're old and sick your kids tell you that they're too busy at work to take time off to help care for you.

@1owu Didn't see 1kat mention that s/he is not considering relocating. But four months from retirement, what are the odds anyone else at AT&T will offer her/him a position? It takes a special kind of c-appy company to lay off someone who's that close to retirement. I've worked for other Fortune 50 companies, and in every one, if a position was eliminated and the employee was within a year of retiring, they'd shift the employee into another position so s/he could ride out the time and retire as scheduled. And, yes, all those companies still made nice profits.

That’s a pretty rude remark to tell someone to just get up and relocate after their parents just passed away. I guess you really got off to being so insensitive to someone in a crisis like this. You sound like typical upper management treating people like cattle in the stock yards.

@1kat: there are over 1,000 management jobs open across the country. If you’re not able to relocate perhaps you should’ve been saving money.

21 years svc at AT&T and I'm being surplused with only 4 months from retirement. I used FMLA to care for elderly parents the last 2 years. 1 died 2016 and one died 2018. 1 day after funeral I find out I'm surplused. Last day of my employment is 10.19. Three stressful years and an only child and no family here, then surplused And my mom retired with 32 years from AT&T.

A-N-D.........

ATT WILL NOT GIVE A RECOMMENDATION OF EMPLOYMENT WHEN SURPLUSED.

Same old voluntary separation offer. Same old tandard severance. I love how the big kicker they're offering is some mindless speculation about what might/ may/ could possibly happen with interest rates so you ought to take this offer now. That is part of the standard script now (same as the ATO "offer" earlier this year). Start offering a little enhanced severance and you'll see people taking the offer. But I don't think they really care about that. BTW for those of you that will be asking looks like this is Finance (Joni Arison = SVP Finance).
