Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

It pays to be lowly talented person in Verizon!

On Monday September 24th, Verizon announced that it's selling over 1200 US workers to Infosys, an Indian consulting company known for it's "Sweat Shop" style work ethics and has been investigated and fined $34M by justice department for H1B Visa fraud

As stated by Verizon CIO in an email sent to the employees sold to Infosys "You are the most knowledgeable talent to go to Infosys". As if being sold to Infosys without any choice is not bad enough, to add "Insult to the Injury" they are not even paid ANY severance package.

The irony is, while the "most talented and critical" people are forced out of Verizon without ANY severance package, at the same time "not-so-talented" people remain employed in Verizon and given 60 weeks of pay just for leaving the company on their own.

Verizon CIO, Shankar Arumugavelu, along with the new CEO, Hans Vestberg, is forcefully selling people to Infosys whether they want to go or not (remember slavery?). And if they don't go, they’re going to get "diddly squat" ..no severance, no bonus and of course "NO JOB".

Many of these so called "most talented" people have worked for 20, 25 and even 30+ years in Verizon and are close to retirement. Repeated calls from 1200+ Verizon employees asking for a severance package has gone on deaf ears of Verizon leadership team.

Verizon has gone from "Can you hear me now?" to "I can't hear you now". Wonder how 5G would be like with this attitude.

Bottom line, here is what Verizon is "Communicating" :

If you are an Intelligent and talented individual who worked tirelessly for 50-60 hours a week for 20 -30 years, you’re a very lucrative slave for Verizon and would be rewarded by being sold to an Indian company.

However if you are lowly-talented/ incompetent/ dim-witted and may be even stupid person, Verizon may be the place to be, as you will be guaranteed a handsome severance package if they ever let you go.

Way to go Shankar and Hans !

I am not sure why they have separated these 1200 employees out with no good benefits.

OP, I do not like your words. Please remember, a grasshopper with an ant within its firm grasp is better off than the praying mantis left standing in the dusty field that lacks precipitation of any sort. Do you not see this?

This is is true! If you are a good performer most likely your request for separation will be rejected and non performers will be accepted. And retained staff will be given lower sti payout and no rewards. It pays to be average or low performer here. It goes to show how the org is built!!

Do not refer to working employees as slaves. Learn what slaves have gone through before commenting about people's time at Verizon. Slavery is no joking matter nor should be made light of. No one up in Verizon is being raped, beaten, having their children sold or taken away, or having their human rights stripped,

If you felt that too much was being asked of you, then you should have left a long time ago. That was your failure for not walking out a long time ago. As for those who were sold to Infosys, yes they were given the short end of the stick. I do not agree with the poor handling / tactics of the company. This new leadership has me realizing that they truly do not care what all the hard working employees have put into this company.

The company is profitable but the greed is more important. No one asked the company to purchase wireless from Vodafone without looking at the future. It was leadership's failure not to realize that the market was going to get oversaturated and then to add more insult to their customers, turn around and follow behind AT&T and get rid of unlimited data. Because that is all this company leadership knows, follow what others are doing. Copy other companies, aka Google, and then believe that they can out beat them in their market simply because their egos are too huge to bother to think and look what is ahead.

So to those who went to Infosys, I fully understand your anger. Those that remain behind, I sympathize as I see what is coming. We are heading towards a really bumpy ride, hope all have their helmets and seat belts on tightly.

The retained VZ employees who are offered the lucrative enhanced separation pkg get over a year’s pay to walk out the door and when employed elsewhere get double, the pkg plus that pay. The “valuable” employee getting terminated and hired by InfoSys gets a sweat shop job for at least a year while they train their offshore replacement, then possibly terminated or at least reduced in several ways. So the VZ person walks out the door with a year plus of cash, while the IS person gets his year of cash strung out in an extra year of paychecks. Which is coincidentally how VZ is paying IS in this deal. They’re paying $700 million to IS and funding it with the stolen separation bonuses of the “valuable” workers they’re screwing over.

After the move date, you can put your resume out.

When you find something, move on.

You can state "its the best job market since the 1950's" your only spewing data that is very general in nature. In a perfect world that would be the optimistic view , it's not a perfect world. I'm sure you would not be so optimistic if it was you taking a cut in pay and benefits .

NE landline w/ staff (both union and management) was sold to Fairpoint ... no one was offered any “package” to avoid being placed under the new company. FGTE landline w/ staff (both union, non-union and management) was sold to Frontier ... no one was offered any “package” to avoid being placed under the new company. Terremark, Yahoo, XO, etc. were all purchased by Verizon along with their staffing. This is (and always has been) the normal process when one company acquires another. This is not “Slavery”, as you have a choice to not be “sold”, by simply removing yourself from the purchase whenever you like. Slaves had no such opportunity, nor were they paid for their toils, and had to endure many more hardships than just going from one company to another, all the while being highly paid. Comparing your predicament to slavery, is really an insult to the suffering and injustice that real slaves had to endure. This is the best job market since the 1950’s, so if you are truly as highly skilled and marketable as you insinuate, then this is actually a good opportunity for you to go somewhere that you think your services will be appreciated.

I can't go about insulting people at Verizon, I do agree with the points you make about ending up with the short stick and the ethics that Verizon is showing are extremely lame, but other people got "lucky".. or call it what you please, for whatever reason were not included in this cut-throat cut,

I don't believe they deserve to be called as you called them, the issue here is that is not fair to be sold without an option, is not fair not to be able to pursue a job properly and to lose the severance package you worked so hard to get for all those years, and to be swatted away all by Verizon as if it was trash.

They initiated the layoff, which they renounce to call it like that (for legal reasons), is just a way to steal from the hard worker people that showed loyalty to a company that is showing it is not deserving any of it.
