Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Got New Job... Verizoneers u have killer experience.

Monday, put the message out that I was looking.

Monday night, interview scheduled for Tuesday.

Tuesday job offer going from Engineer at VZ to Director of a large firm. Plus they will let me start so I get the payout <3!!

Don't sell yourself short, Verizon was an excellent place to hone your skill set if you took the opportunity.

Hey, if they want to pay you to leave... Y not. It'll pay off my mortgage and start a better paying job the next week.... Hahaha

It's true. Verizon has some of the most competitive benefits packages in the industry. You might be able to find something in Sprint, Tmobile, Altice, but don't expect as high a salary, unless you get a gig with Google, Amazon, or Goldman Sachs.

A portfolio? STAR? This person is full of malarkey.

This is NOT the norm, guys. I was let go on 06/30 with 15+ years of service and I have still NOT found something comparable to what I had at Verizon. Be open to accepting a lower offer or contract work because the job market just isn't what it used to be, especially now that there will be an influx of talent that will be looking as well.

That’s much clearer. It seemed like you started this process one day and got an offer the next. In reality, you have been working on the process for years and preparing yourself if something like this were going to happen. However, I’ve know people who have had to give up their generous packages because their termination date was pushed out while their job was already lined up.

For those cynical enough to think this was a "Troll Post"... it takes more than updating LinkedIn or applying on Monster to get a job "the next day".

a) you need to generate goodwill and help people when they ask for it even if it is a burden. Someday that goodwill might get cashed in... Besides it's a good marketing skill for you, we are all in the personal marketing game

b) offer unsolicited help to anyone, especially business people outside the VZ circle, when they have a problem you know how to solve with your unique skill set... this is marketing

c) you need a portfolio, it needs to be up-to-date, indexed, and in the STAR format... one item per page. You should be working on projects that are "portfolio worthy". If a project is not portfolio worthy, it's not worth your time.

d) you need to be using LinkedIn consistently and have achieved an "all-star" rating from LinkedIn.

e) you need to spend 4+ hours a week, every week, working on complementary but not related job skills... like software defined radios, programming, database, hacking, public speaking, etc...

f) you should be networking inside and outside of Verizon and outside of Telecom.. you will not find a job the next day on a job board or by sending in resumes. Make sure Vendors know you're not a fool, they all talk and their network is vast.

g) be curious about business.. understand the budget and how it impacts what decisions the company makes. Verzion is a mostly good financial company, Marni made mo--nic decisions. She shouldn't have been allowed to sell a deal buying out her bestie from AOL.. lol. The board of directors must have been too scared to confront her.

h) get a proven track record of innovation... get multiple patents... it's easier than you think when VZ is footing the bill.

I) once you do A thru H, you should be getting the occasional unsolicited job offer.. "hey come work for us". Once that happens you know you are over the target. If not, something is off from the list above. The company that extended me the offer wanted to talk earlier in the year about employment... It came out of the blue.

But if the job is so much better, it's OK if VZ pushes the date or refuses the package, he/she can just leave (but that's hard with all the money on the table)

FWIW: I know of very few firms that would make a director offer the same day as the interview, but....

This may be a troll as well. VZ could decline to let you walk.. even if they don't decline they can push you put date to June 28th.. guessing that company will allow a June 28th start date?
