Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What’s Management saying?

Is management freely discussing the buy out offer with anybody or are they giving you the political BS?

The managers and directors I work with had no clue what was going on. I've personally seen a director who was distraught over a manager getting pulled from beneath him and shipped to Infy.

First line managers are just another worker bee, used, abused, and kept in the dark. Directors somrwhat less so. Everything that's going on was decided way way above anybody you might rub elbows with.

That said, the directors I've talked to are all thinking about taking the package.

People are stupid. All they say is they want a buyout or an EISP so they can leave. Now they have one and get cold feet. Grow some balls and man up. Its a huge opportunity to depart this sinking ship. People are so gutless.

So if you stay, you may get the standard package when your time comes/maybe not, and also have to deal with potentially being re-org'd as well as potentially taking on additional work load from all the people that left.

Its a st!tstorm no matter what you choose personally. This will have a ripple effect to those left behind.

What happened to the corp tax windfall?

I dont think this is just about 5G or reducing cost by 10bil in 10yrs..perhaps Vz is seeking offers for certain parts of the business?

My belief is that vz is going to cut costs by accepting low-performing, high cost employees because of the persuasion tactics used in the offer, not by divesting a business in their portfolio. The fact that it was across the portfolio (mostly) indicates this. Rebadging is a possibility if you’re role is in a function that doesn’t line up with its core competence or unprofitable. Divesting has a lot of risks for Verizon, such as a decrease in bargaining power with its suppliers. “Economies of scope” does imply divesture of certain functions, on the other hand (IT?).

I doubt upper management wants you to know. Does it say in the offer that this offer may not be offered again? The tactics seem like they want as many people to accept and they will make performance-based, cost per employee decisions. People are thinking this is the end of wireline and that everyone will be laid off. This is just jumping to unwarranted conclusions.

They didn’t know either. Everyone is in the same boat, trying to figure out what is best for them and their families

One manager in our garage is taking it, another says he is thinking about it but I don’t think he will tell us if he does take it until his last day of work.

Considering how much activity is on here, it sounds like they were also in the dark. A management buyout, who would have ever guessed. They just did RIFs. I would bet they were clueless and still are.

They were very surprised and do not know what it looks like. They do not know how many are wanted. We should all consider what is best for our families and make our own personal decisions.

What did the union hear?
