Offering people a choice is a great idea. It would be nice if senior management shared projected manning reduction numbers. The magnitude of the projected manning reductions might help people with their decisions.

I agree, vph -- what's next if you stay is THE bigger question. If there isn't a job for you to stay in because they are planning an org restructure and your team is dissolving, it would be nice to know. If they are reducing total management positions (not people, POSITIONS) by 50%, it would be nice to know. Because that is a huge factor in whether or not I'll take the offer.
I don't think it's a headcount number but rather it's a dollar figure they are targeting. Depending on band level of volunteers could be less people if lower Band number. Bigger question I think is what else is in the works? Big reorg? Selling off underperforming parts of the business? Unfortunately none of the future plans will be disclosed before you have to choose whether to raise your hand for the voluntary separation offer.
My thought is if you are considered essential (not really sure what that means these days) they arent going to let you go. SO basically during the last strike most/some of the folks that were left back at the "home" position were essential employees. So i chalk that up to they want to get rid of you but can't because someone wants and needs you to stick around.
The biggest question will be WHO will make the decision for go /no go. If its HR they will look at money, if its upper management then those that are considered essential will get the sorry you cant go you are very valuable.....right now, but who knows in 3 months.
my 2$
I had a dream 2 months ago (a nightmare because it was of work). We were in a large meeting and we were told we were being moved to another project. It was rather exciting actually that finally we get to work on something else and that we were actually considered. Then the dream turned to an employee satisfaction survey. I hand wrote the responses and reamed Verizon. Whoops!
I think many of you all are missing the point. Why would Verzion tell you the projective number of anything. You can outrun the company expectations all you can do is take care of yourself and your family. Even if enough people don’t take this package they will lay-off 4 months from now. And you still will leave with nothing.
Here in BR, the expectation is 50 to 60% will take the offer. It will vary from none to 5 or 10%. Probably mid-range is 30%, so expect a third to go and take the offer of those given it.
It would be nice if they shared that with the employee's assuming they have some great plan on how they will reduce costs. They would not do that because it might help at&t with their plans. And I'm sure at&t is thinking about what Verizon just did and lay off more of their people soon.
They won't let you go if you are working on a project and you are needed on this project
Ask Senior Mgt how much workers should give, the answer is always "more".
