Veteran Hiring

Saw a recent article in the Insider touting all of the veteran hiring going on. Didn't see a story about all of the well qualified veterans being shown the door over the last couple years though. A couple excellent long tenured performers in my group just in the last go around. #keepingitreal

1hyv- Wasn't aware this was exclusively a bargained for site? Yes I am non bargained for. Unlike you, I won't besmirch everyone that is not in my work group. That said, I was here back in the day and managed technical folks before the Unions came in (on the wireless side). Those were better days when folks were judged on job performance and merit. Yes, you're correct... the Unions are able to protect pieces of garbage such as yourself solely based on seniority. What an archaic and stupid system. It makes no business sense at all to have to get rid of a smart go- getter over a lazy and not too bright mo--n such as yourself, simply because YOU may have been here a month longer. You can see why some other forward thinking companies go to great lengths to prevent contamination of their workforce with the unions.

@bap I agree that is a good idea and I have no problem with it either. In certain job titles, let’s say “project manager” for instance... and the various flavors of that (senior tech project/program management, many others) many many people found themselves in that job title after various organizational changes and reorgs. By far the majority of these project managers have no formal training and hold no certifications in project management. I am not saying they are all worthless by any means, there’s just a hell of a lot in that category. I don’t see it as terribly fair to those that have worked to earn a professional certification in project management (I.e. PMP, ACP, etc) and that have to maintain that certification with ongoing education to have to “compete” for actual project management jobs with folks that have no training in the profession.

@bap- great idea. 90% of the current employee base would be gone!

the problem is they don't care if you are qualified or not in a lot of cases

That's how you make room for the new veterans. Personally I would support HR producing mandatory tests for each of our roles instead of the annual position description attestation. If you don't pass the test for your job title, you are surplus.
