Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Less than a week to make a decision

Anybody else not closer to the decision than they were on the first day?

One deciding factor for me was the other two I share the work load, shifts , and on call with bailed the first day they could sign up, which would leave me holding the ball for everything. Screw that at my age, life's to short, and I enjoy having time away from work, which I won't have if I stay.

Hit the button at 00:01 on 10/1. Just waiting.

Not me. I am a software engineer and for me there is a ton of opportunity out there. I woke up at midnight on the first available day to see if I could be the first one to push the button.

Everyone's situation is different- the video made no difference for my situation- too young for "the rule of 73", so retirement is not really an option at this time. But also young enough (under 50) I could start over elsewhere. Lifting the cap (as some have rumored) would have very little affect on me, since I have 21 years of service. I am seeing similar salaries for what I do in my area, but I could lose ability to work from home. Also helping me decide is decisions about how those they know are leaving are going to affect the organization- there are no promotions from within. This is a consolidation move, for cost cutting. So if your management leaves, they will move you under another manager that's not leaving, and everybody left will have to pick up more delegated tasks. I think back to the last few RIFs, and I envied those that left while I picked up their tasks for no extra compensation.

If I could find work paying anything close to what VZ is paying me, I'd do it in a heartbeat. With what's out there now, I stand to take a 40 to 50% pay cut. You better believe I'm looking every day.

I believe we are being coerced. If they were offering the package if you are rif'd but did not volunteer, that would be a different story.

If you're that indecisive you should stay, you'll fit right in with the clock-watchers remaining.

lots and lots of sleepless nights - been back and forth multiple times - but today's reorg news may push me over the edge to go

Well was hoping with the reorg announcement that they would have at least mentioned the trickle down change. It helps no one to mention the top tier without the layers below. So the decision is still up in the air. Hopefully they will go into more detail on the call, but not sure they will. I would really like to see the "button" push % after the call, I bet depending on what they talk about it will be a pretty busy site.
