Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

High Paid vs Long Term Employees

We often talk about how "older" employees are being targeted with this voluntary separation. This group makes great money and a ballooning pension. The reduction makes sense as VZ can forgo fattening up pensions. However, VZ is on the hook to pay for retirement healthcare. This seems like a big cost to the company, which can slow down the 10 billion savings.

What are the thoughts on high paid, younger employees? There are 5-10 year employees who make $125K+, Wouldn't this group be a better target (if not more than retirees)? VZ doesn't have to pay retiree benefits and they can simply write a check to release high paid employees.

Young workers who are paid a lot are paid that because they need to be to attract them from their jobs. What they are doing at Verizon instead of Facebook/Amazon/Netflix/Google apple etc or countless startups makes me wonder a bit.

People who have been in positions for decades and the alleged target don’t all have a pension and retiree benefits many were on the cusp of the shutdown many years ago. Even if they get 75% of their benefits paid they have to pay more than the public rate because the VZ cost is so high as only retirees are in the plan. Many have tiny pensions especially compared to their 401k. If they are far along enough in years they may soon be on Medicare so any cost might be short term.

Older workers are stupid and lazy. The younger ones are bright, energetic, and fresh.

Interesting statement. Yet the older one know the network and have to train the younger, energetic ones.

The frozen pension I am getting is a whole 12,000. That is going to really help seeing how it was frozen in 1998.

“5 weeks of vacation is pricey”

Who gets vacation? One of the reasons I crossed that out is although I get 4 weeks I tend to only get holidays. On vacation days other people work and that somehow means everyone has to even if they were on vacation.

Its not how much you make today , Its not how many experience you have, Its not who you know in the past (Kick a-- folks) , Its not what age you are in today.

Its all about, Are you up to the market with technology , Are you talented, Do you have business focus, Do you drive business. Are you delivering the current needs .

Finally, You are not one of those b---s--- guys, PPT guys without delivery of product.... who pretend working all day phone/conference....and do jake sh-- for company..

Your income levels is not a reason for VRS/RIFF's. because it is costly for VZ to hire such people in market and there are many people outside the market to hire you.

no idea why you think there are ballooning pensions and paid healthcare. Neither exist at Vz.

@tzl older workers make for better employees who do not expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. It is proven that they are honest, hard working, responsible, dependable, loyal, focused, organized and mature, all positive traits valued in the workplace. And remember, if those bright energetic and fresh young employees stay long enough, they will become one of those targeted older workers.

Tenured Verizon Wireless management employees receive no pension and no retiree medical benefits, unless you call the 20k plus yearly premium a benefit. They do get the 25% off their cell phone bill. Lol. Union employees obviously fare better.

All mgmt pensions were all frozen back in 2006, had they not been frozen alot of the older Verizon pension eligible employees would have been in a better financial situation and would have probably retired early.

@VYNOVUD- tzl- I have NO doubt I and most other older employees can run circles around your bright, energetic, full of yourself a--, Funny I get questions all day long from your bright and energetic buddies of how to handle issues.

Don’t forget many of us were working and building Verizon into the great company it used to be when you were getting your participation trophies.

Lots of fake news stuff here.

  1. Managers pensions frozen a long time ago, (before I got there).

as a result, the pension will not change.

  1. 5 weeks of vacation is pricey.

  2. 5 - 10 year employees also offered the severance package.

Please go away troll.

Older workers are stupid and lazy. The younger ones are bright, energetic, and fresh. Why would you want to keep the ones past their prime?
