Some turkey in the company decides that they could save maybe $25M by cutting the retiree mobile phone discount to 25% and the board agrees. A $130B company that can not treat their retirees with respect by maintaining a discount slightly below competitive market rates. It’s a sad comentary on the leaders of Verizon today. Retirees are often advocates for VZ, and it would be nice if VZ could throw some pocket change to them instead of stripping their benefit of decades of service to the company.

As a vet, I can get 50% off at T-Mobile which is much greater than the 25% i can get at VZ as a vet and 20+ year employee. Sad..
@VWm Because there ARE NO MORE retiree benefits. Those left long ago along with the promises.
So literally my only retiree benefit would be 50% and now 25% off my phone plan? Yeah!? Wonder if I’ll make it another twenty years to qualify although many clubs and other companies offer very similar discounts on VZ plans.
If you are retiring or leaving and giving up your 50% discount, T-Mobile is a reasonable alternative.
It’s a disgrace how Verizon cut the retiree phone benefit plan from 50% to 25% and then have the audacity to claim they are the company that promotes human ability. Management retirees leave with 20k plus cost per year in retiree heath benefits and a 25% off phone plan with not much more. My advise to any millennial is to get your experience, add Verizon to your resume and move on.
...it all started with the whole, let move into this open space office design...no "real" space for you..from there to this. Ha, writing on the wall people...or should I say, writing on the hideous exposed tile ceilings. Just look up to comprehend the reality hidden in plain sight.
While it's pocket change to the company it's also probably not that critical to the retirees. Many of those forced out will change carriers regardless of cost (and this just makes it a little easier), those that retire with fond memories of VZ (well, who knows!) will keep the service and the increased price.
From what I remember: not so long ago Wireline ACTIVE employees got 25% while active VzW ones got 50%. Then the company made both 50%. WIreline RETIREE have been 25% while VzW retirees got 50%. Now the company is making it "uniform" again, but this time with the lower figure. For Wireline though, the new rules are slightly better, getting 25% off line charges as well.
Or, how about this. If you don't qualify for the "Rule of 73" (which is years of employment plus age has to equal 73 or greater), then you get nothing. 25 years with the Company and don't even qualify for any retiree benefit.
