Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Still undecided

I thought I'd be ready by know, know what to do, but nope. I can't believe it's taking me this long to decide. I hope others are in a better place than I am.

I think I'm half hoping that enough people will accept before the deadline and the decision is made for me. (And yes, I know that's not how it works, but I didn't say my inner voice was rational.)

Deadline to accept is Nov. 10th. Perhaps Hans' webcast this week will provide enough info to help finalize your decision.

1aoc, and you might not get laid off in 6 months but if you do you have 6 more months of contributions to your 401K and your STI and paid vacation days, and you can collect unemployment.

So,? you worked for 6 more months.

How do you figure, if you dont take the package and get RIF'd in June with 34 weeks severance that means just worked for 6 month that you would have been paid for anyway with the buyout. I would rather get paid for 6 months and not work.

Same boat. Good luck! I'll be waiting until the very last minute to click the button.

OP, stay. Once you leave, you cannot come back. As long as you are here, you can always decide to leave. If you manage to stay here beyond June, you're ahead of the game. if you get laid off after that 35 weeks severence plus the 26 weeks you worked = 61 plus, 401k contributions, vacation days, bonus.

I think if you are so conflicted, don't put yourself in the position of being worse off. You can leave whenever you want....if you stay.

@uej Good luck over there. Keep your eyes on the job market though. I don't trust that company. And they can spout all they want about long term employment. This deal has to be financially advantageous for them and our salaries do not make it so. Fortunately I was in a position to decline that offer, but I wish my fellow V teamers well.

OP,

Follow your gut.

The future is not certain here.

I am Infosys.

I know people who are staying, and people who are accepting the offer.

Good luck in your choice.

Quarterly RIFs for years have just gotten old. The stress put on our family is no longer worth the financial premium they play employees. Great products, benefits, pay, etc., but I wouldn't advise a young person to attempt to build a career here. It's a place to come for a while to get experience and then move on. Odds are stacked against you after 10 years. Sad, yet true.

I think you’re better off staying.

Every October, it is more like every quarter over the last several years.

Take the buyout, read online everything says that when a company offers you a buyout to take it. Apply for jobs and you will land somewhere, who wants to work at a place where every Oct you have to worry if you are getting let go and at a lower offer.

I think there are a allot of people in the same position. The biggest concern isn't really getting a job, but more so insurance if you can't find what you are looking for. For me the $$ would last me a good while, but after the year or so is up and nothing interesting comes up the insurance would take whats left.

No harm in testing the job waters even if you're still on the fence. The best time to land a new job is when you already have one!

Yeah, stay. If you're struggling this much with the choice it's best that you stay until you are absolutely certain.
