Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Layoffs either way

I'm getting more and more worried that even if enough people accept the buyout offer, we'll end up with layoffs that will be justified by reorganization. Or they will under-report the number of people who decided to accept the offer and use that as an excuse to get rid of more people.

Am I just being paranoid?

Of course, people want others to take the package to avoid being laid off; if the numbers do not meet you will be included.

I've been through a similar "offer" before with another large corporation as has my wife. Don't fool yourself into thinking you're to valuable to be let go. If you have some years in with Verizon, take the offer and move on!

If Verizon doesn't get a large enough take rate with this buy out, there will be indisgriminate lay-off's with little thought given to who, or what position. When the dust settles they will move whoever is left (short tenure people with less experience making less money) around to fill in the gaps and/or increase the workload of those left.

The party is over....time to get out while you can.

Cuts are going to continue. They've been going on for several years and are just now reaching different parts of the business. Also, you have to keep in mind that it depends to some extent on who "owns" certain parts of the business. Anyone who gets promoted is going to have their own ideas of what is and isn't important, who is and isn't going to make them look good, and how to prove they were the best person for the job. Things are changing rapidly and there is a huge shift to the indirect side of the business. My best advice is to stay, use your time to get more education or certificates or accolades and try to transition to an indirect role.

I was already asked to tank my employees and hand it in to the ED. So thats the reality.

Why do they need to under report any numbers? I doubt whether they will report the numbers in the first place.

Legally they are free to let go as they please

Don’t worry. mostly bad management will be gone. Mostly friends and family packages.

You are being paranoid about this bit. VZ doesn't need any fabricated excuse, they are free to "right-size" any time they want to (well, providing they meet WARN requirements etc) And as Wall St likes reductions, they are unlikely to under-report, the more the better!

There will be more cuts. Let's not kid ourselves. We've had cuts every other quarter, even when the stock price is doing great. There has to be something major going on with the reorg for the Company to be willing to walk away from this much talent at once. I think nqj is right. Just depends on who ends up being in charge down the chain and what side of the reorg you end up on. It's a lousy situation mentally and emotionally for employees who have put their blood sweat and tears into building this place. It's justified for "the needs of the Business". Stay and have a market leading job, go and take a decent package. Sounds good on paper but s---s if you are living it.

yes I do believe you are being paranoid to a degree but if anyone thinks the VSP is the end all they are wrong. It will really depend on what side of the reorgs your team/organization is on.
